  • In attending the Winston West event at Tri-City Raceway this past weekend, my goal was to meet some of the people I hear about. One person in particular was Austin Cameron. • 06/02/2003 - UPDATE FROM AUSTIN
    Hey everybody, AC here.

This is by no means total victory, but it’s a great start. ...

Austin, when a close friend of mine named Jim Inglebright asked me about NHL and told me he was floored by the news that his teammate had been diagnosed with this cancer. He asked me what I thought. I told him that my experiences told me that the positive state of mind that a racer must have to win will get you right through this but the side effects would be a pain in your everything. You see, I've studied the mind for what seems like forever and the one conclusion found was that there are no limits of what the mind can actually make happen within our own bodies, and if your real good even outside our bodies. My son, Aaron was the final proof of the Biblical phrase"Your faith has heeled you, not I". He was diagnosed with Burkett's Lymphoma at 10 years old while being a normal kid playing Pop Warner football. The bad part about Burkett's is that it grows so fast there are very few survivors. When we were told that there was not much hope because like you it had spread throughout his stomach cavity and lymph system(stage 4)in just 3 weeks, I knew the only chance was to not let my son hear this condemming news knowing the mind is powerful. I stayed with him in the hospital, guarding his door and not letting anyone near him that could not pass the test of true belief that he would be back to football as soon as he shook this off. You know a boy believes his father knows everything and in my mind I had to truly believe that this was a simple thing to knock out. I told my son this was as easy as a common cold to beat and that he would have to take the chemo for six months to insure it would stay away. On the night of his first chemo, they gave him only a little Vincristine to make sure how he would react. Aaron and I had a talk before he went to sleep about how he is going to use the medicine in his mind to kill these bugs. When he woke up he told me that he had a dream that Jesus came to him and spoke but he could not understand what he said, but he handed Aaron a cancer gun to use. He said it was like nintendo, he would shoot two and another one would appear, when he woke he said he thought he had won. This story he told me brought tears of an unsure source of happiness to my eyes as we went at 9:00 AM to the Galium scan which shows the glow of tumors as you know. When the process was finished the glow that was there the prior day went from his lower hips, full body width to his shoulder blades was now the size of a grape in his mid abdomen. The entire Oakland Kaiser Cancer Hospital was aware and buzzing from this and documented this dream and seemingly miracle. After six months in the hospital on his back, from the pain of the chemo itself and not eating they kept him there, the grape size glow was still there and determined to be scar tissue and that he beat this stuff in the first 14 hours in the hospital. As you may imagine he became quite a hospital and local celebrity and is now enjoying drag racing with his sisters and myself. After five years of clean checks his Doctor told him that he didn't really know what to tell him to expect later because there were no statistics since there weren't any survivors that he knew of. Aaron was a little baffled at that point because untill then he never really knew there had been any risk. Moral of the story, God gave you an awsome power of belief which you use in every race you win, you apply it to outside forces around your body effectively, your power within your own body must be intense when your belief is true. Your subcontious makes your heartbeat and makes your lungs breathe without your telling them to, yet you can make your heartbeat change and breathing change with a change of mind state (fear, love, racing). You my friend can and will apply this same process to your stem cells or any other body fuction you desire. You see Austin when I told Jim that you would be okay I knew you had the will to win and that you would control these elements whether you acknowledged it or not. I do believe your back and took 1st place so I am now writing you so as you will recognize that you did this, the medicine may have assisted you,(remember the sugar pill theory), but you have the state of mind to win and did this. Since I went through this experience I have been teaching visual and healing to all who will listen, especially children who's minds are still open. Return the favor God and the universe bestowed on you and pass your knowledge on, talk about it to kids. Peace and prayers for you and all around you..... Larry Beals....... HytecLB@msn.com

Austin. I have a lot of people asking about you. Not to be rude, but the sickest puppy I ever had, the puppy everyone thought would never be a big strong dog, the very one some people nearly gave up on, is today the fiestiest German Shepherd mix you will ever meet. She is pure energy. She lives on a ranch in New Mexico now and is a nonstop bundle of energy. Do you think that when you get back in the car you are going to be even better? Have you been driving tracks in your sleep? I hope you get back in that car soon. I am happy for all the drivers that have had an opportunity in it, but you are the one that belongs in it.

Hi Austin! How is it going? I keep waiting for the day to hurry up and come when your name is back on the lineup sheet. The hail attacked us and we have a few broken windows in the solarium. The mosquitoes are loving the "open door" policy. I took a part time job just so I could get out and meet more people. I have my Bible study pals, but you know you need to have a mix of friends. The first day of the job my cat went running out the door, but thank God everything is big in Texas. Evidently there was a nest of Baby birds because these huge ol' birds with yellow bellies came swooping down and pecking on the cat. So Yuri got his behind in the house real quick and I made it to work on time. I missed going to any race this weekend. Dan is at Sonoma to take pictures and call with news. Becky is going to call today with Winston West news. Well, don't want to jabber on, but I did want to let you know I think of you a lot. Email me if you ever are up to it. Oh. And I forgot to send Justin's photo. Will get it off on Monday. Love ya. Another one of your moms.

Austin, I hope everything is going well for you. I know what you are going through. I was diagnosed with non-hogdkins lynphoma in 2001, I had 6 months of chemo and 1 month of radiation. I know that it is a hard thing to go through but the outcome will be fine. I have been doing well for 2 years, I just thank god for modern medacine. Good luck in the future. I will be praying for the best. On the racing side of things, the replacement driver Jeff Jefferson that is driving your car in Tri-city will do very well, he is a great driver and friend. I hope to meet you at TCR.

Austin, I met Janet at our local dirt track here in Odessa TX. I had already heard about you on tv and found it to be a strange incodent that we met. I just wanted to let you know that I have had Hodgkins and it reoccured 3 different times. I now take a prevenitive treatment every two weeks but it keeps it away and in remission and allows me to race. I just wanted to let you know I know what you are going through and I know it is tough. Just remember to keep a good attitude and you can beat this I am living proof. I was diagnosed when I was 16 and will be 24 on June 3. Hang in there and if you ever want to talk let me or Janet know.

AC, I am beginning to believe that #16 car just doesn't want to win without you. No matter who is sitting in the seat, it seems it 'knows' it's not you and misbehaves. Both you and the #16 have that checkered flag in sight and I know soon after you reunite, you'll both be taking that flag! Miss you....
  • Deon and Clyde - Concord, NC
Austin: We are happy for the news that the tumors are disappearing! I got an email from Brett McMillan (sports broadcaster from Charlotte NC that was at Madera this week-end) as to how you were progressing. We know the weight loss will only be temporary but Bill will make sure your seat fits and personally we will all be glad to see you back in it! Don't worry about the hair - it grows back too!! You are on our prayer list and just keep the faith. Remember, the Lord does not put on us more than we can handle. We appreciate your own personal updates and check this site daily for news.
  • Terri
Austin-thanks for the update! We missed you at Madera but are glad you are taking care of you first and foremost! We continue to send our love and prayers your way and can't wait to see you back at the races!!
  • Austin Cameron
Hey everybody, AC here. You have all been so incredible by writing in your prayers and well wishes that I wanted to give you an update. First of all, some really amazing news-I had a chest X-ray a few weeks ago and that mass in my chest that was originally about the size of a whoopee cushion is now no longer visible on X-ray! This is by no means total victory, but it’s a great start. I don’t know how to begin to tell you how much it means to me that you all continue to give so much of your energy to me by writing in. It gives me more strength than you can imagine. Janet, I especially want to thank you for putting together this web page and keeping it going. You are truly an angel. I missed everyone at Madera, but I want to assure you that I will be at every single race (driving or not) my health allows. I want to give back everything I can to Napa Auto Parts, BMR Racing and Winston West for the incredible support I continue to receive. I’m near the end of my second 4-week cycle of chemo, and I’ve lost about 20 pounds. Bill McAnally is whining cuz he’s gonna have to buy me a new “slimmer” seat. I haven’t been able to get out much, and let me tell you, I’m going stir crazy here on this couch. I can’t wait to see you all again, I’ll be the skinny bald guy. Finally, let me give thanks to the Lord for the strength and courage He gives me through all of you.
  • J. NOWAK (SHOWDOG)
HEY DUDE, HANG IN THERE. I INTEND TO SEE YOU WIN A WINSTON WEST CHAMPIONSHIP & MORE! YOU ARE IN MY WHOLE FAMILIES THOUGHTS & PRAYERS =)

  • janet
Austin! You are not going to believe this! I went to the local track tonight, remember the one where I have committed you to race? It's called Petro Plex and is run by a minister. He did away with alchohol in the pits and cut the tickets down to $5. He is trying to get kids off strees. Well, I ventured into the pits tonight and the funny thing is I almost didn't go to the race at all. But something made me feel like I was supposed to be there. And you know what? I met a friend of yours there. No, you don't even know him, but he saw you on SPEEDTV and heard about your cancer. He knows your name and saw you were there at California. You see, his name is Justin Graves and in 1996 he was diagnosed with Hodgkins. He has been battling it and has won, when they told him the cancer was leading. Oh sure there are always new races with the stupid cancer, but it is just an obnoxious racer that can be whipped. You see that is what you racers do, you have that spirit to be the best. Justin truly believes you can beat anything. He still has set backs, he had lung surgery I think he had a collapsed lung. He is still real sore from that, but he is waiting until July when the doctor will let him race and then he is going back into the IMCA. He gave me a picture of his car and wrote to you on the back. I will scan the photo for you, but will you send me (janet@racingwest.com) your home address in the email? I don't want this to be delayed going from shop to you. I have to tell you more about the racing and stuff later this week. Right now I have to go wash the mud out of my hair. I love you Austin. From another one of your moms. Hugs.
  • Nowak Family
5/30/03 Cameron, we are still checking up on you. We know it's rough but you hang in there ok. Think Positive and we will too. Keep smiling :O)
  • Rachel Johnson
Hey AC, just thought id let you know im thinking of you and praying for you daily. :) Get well soon buddy its just not the same without ya!
  • janet
Hey Austin: I heard you had a bit of a set back but pulled right back up. You are too cool. My brother was hospitalized for the same thing you just went in for. Then they (the docs) gave him some medicine that made him act like a grammar school kid. He was making Ice Cream sundaes and topping them off with candy, hot pepper and ketchup, actually anything that was at hand. I thoroughly enjoyed his Peter Pan never grow up style, but since he is a professor at the Post Graduate school at Monterey I guess it is better he got well enough to stop the medicine and get back to being normal. It rained here. That is always big news. There was some flooding and some cars got washed away, but today it is about 100 so it certainly did not cool anything off. I heard CT is driving your car for you at Madera. He should do well for you. I remember he kicked your butt at Laguna Seca, but you got his at Phoenix. I just wish the day would hurry up when you get back in the car. It just seems so far off right now. Sometimes when the days are so pretty, you know those days when all the air is fresh and everything is just so perfect, I think about you and other people I pray for and it doesn’t always seem right that things should be so good and the world turning so easily when I know that as tough as you are being you have your bad days as do the other people (and animals) I pray for. I wish there was a way for us old people to take some of the bad stuff you younger people go through. But I can’t so I will just continue to think of you and pray for you and then someday watch you get back in the car. That will be the day!
  • Terri Leedy
Austin, Just wanted you to know that we are sending you lots of good thoughts and prayers! Let me know if you need more Miracle pills! Hope to see you in Madera this weekend but if not -take care of you and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Hi Austin: I just went ahead and commited you and a few other drivers from NASCAR to come out and race with these IMCA modified guys. All I need to do is wait for you to get well and then tell the other drivers. :) You'll have a blast here, and to the fans out here, the Winston West are huge. Last night there were only 5 cars in the IMCA Modified field, because there was a race near by that paid $10,000 to win. But it was a great show followed by a destruction derby that paid $1,000 to win. The guy that won the demo had a toy poodle with purple nails cheering him on. It's getting hot here again, I think we are going to have some thunderstorms today. I met one lady in the stands and she said her son who is a driver was born in Pacifica. Isn't that there by you? Well, take care, drop an email how you are doing. We all want to hear from you. We want to make sure our prayers our working and if not, maybe we can crank up the voulume. I miss ya Austin.
  • Uncle Mike Sagar

Austin, not a day (or moment nearly) goes by that we are not lifting prayers on your behalf. I have been so encouraged by your clean reports, by your successful chemo and mostly by the incredible love and support that your family, friends and fans have surrounded you with. God is good to give you His love and strength through all these who can literally put their arms around you and be an encouragement and support to you. You are precious to us - and we have loved you for so many years now...I firmly believe that God has an incredible PLAN for YOU and this is but some of the training you are going through as He leads you down the path He has in mind for you. Be diligent in your search for His Purpose for you...He is the great Power and loves you so much that He is with you each step of the way. Grab His Hand when you are discouraged and He will comfort you. We hope to see you soon. Larry got some Pure Adrenalin beanies that he said you all wore when the bald heads were cold!!!! We love you. Charlie, Shirley, Shawn, Missy, Jake, Hailee, Mike, Vanessa Bush, Buzz and Tamra too!

Your mom blesses my heart and I hurt as I see caring for her hurting boy. Margaret Brown wrote the Runaway Bunny. It's a childrens story about a little bunny who tells his mother he has decided to run away."If you run away,"says his mother,"I will run after you. For you are my little bunny."She goes on to tell him that if he becomes a fish in a stream, she will become a fisherman and fish for him. If he becomes a little boy, she will become a human mother and catch him in her arms and hug him. No matter what the little rabbit does, his doggedly persistent, ever-pursuing mother will not give up or go away. "Shucks,"says the little bunny at last,"I might as well stay where I am and be your little bunny." "Have a carrot," his mother then says. This story reminds me of Davids words in Psalm 139:7-10,"Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can flee from Your presence? If I asend into heaven,You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead me, and Your right hand shall hold me." Austin and for all who are listening Let's be thankful that God is relentless in His love for us - ever-pursuing, ever-present, and ever-guiding . (Daily Bread April 1) How can the truth of God's presence be a comfort in our trials?
  • Jo Ann Thrasher

Hi Austin: Went to the local track last night, a ¼ mile clay oval that I am sure if measured would come closer to a 1/3 mile, but then ya know everything is bigger in Texas, maybe even the tracks. There was a decent turnout from ranchers to oilmen and plenty of people in between. It was the typical short track feel, metal stands, little press box that looked like Cajon’s. It smelled like it does when you hike the Southern California foothills. The sunset was alive with a gorgeous sun leisurely fading in the background, all sunrises and sunsets burst with color in West Texas. The grassroots style racing excited even the most reserved people in the stands. The drivers “hung it all out” sliding around the corners flipping dirt clods into the stands. Before the night was over there were heroes and villains, a guarantee fans have to come back to watch the next round. But the entire race, we kept thinking of how fun it would be if we could lure a big name driver out to jump into one of these cars and join the field. Everyone is having all these challenges; I know some people are shaving their head when you lose your hair. Oh….have you lost your hair yet? At least the timing is right. What better occasion than summer to sport the Kojack look? Besides rumor is women find bald headed men attractive. :) Anyway with all the challenges going on for you, I have a new one for you and any other driver that just wants to have fun and celebrate your getting well. I invite every driver from the Winston West, NCT, SWT, NWT, etc. to come race out here in Midland/Odessa once the doctor gives you clearance. It may seem like that day will never come, but someday you will wake up and just feel better, hungry, rested, more like the “good ol’ days”. I am sure the drivers here would love to beat your and every other out of town drivers’ butts. Thinking of you every single day, and that is genuine, no words, just straight from the heart. Love ya Austin.
  • Donie (Fueler32)
Hey Austin, Heard the good news, See... Praying does work and we will not stop til you are back in your ride running around the track in first place. Go get Them Buddie.

Well Austin, what do I say. We were all as shocked as you to find out about the stupid cancer. Even with all these people that care and pray and love you, I am sure at times you must feel alone and scared. I imagine you get burned out and tired also. But, I know that you can do this. It isn't easy. But you, Austin, you can do it. It just isn't as fun without you being in the race. I think about you every day, in fact several times a day. When you have a bad day, Austin, please remember that we might not be writing or calling, but we are thinking and praying and waiting for you to hurry up and get your butt back in a car, where it belongs. Hugs.

You are a winner on the track and more importantly you are a winner in life. You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I thought you would appreciate this quote by Charles Swindoll it’s one of my favorites: "The longer I live the more I realize the impact of attitude on my life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than success, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company...a church...a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past...we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude...I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our Attitudes." Kick this cancer thing so we can go play. I look forward to riding with you soon. :-) D.

Austin, on June 20 of this year, my wife will celebrate her second anniversary of being 'clean', following her bone marrow transplant. When she was first diagnosed, two years before that, she presented with Stage 4 non-hodgkins lymphoma, which was quite nasty. She's now back to work and 100% 'normal' after beating her cancer. It's not going to be fun, Austin, but it's a fight you can win. Everyone has their challenges in life. You're getting yours early. It appears that you have many supporters, which will be a great help to you in your fight. Get well soon so you can get back to doing the things you enjoy.
