George was a mainstay at Cajon Speedway for 21 years. He started when the track was still a 3/8 mile clay oval in 1965 and drove locally through the 1986 season with the exception of 1972 when Cajon Speedway was briefly shutdown and the El Cajon Stock Car Racing Assn ran at South Bay Park Speedway. During his stellar career, George visited victory lane 11 times and had a total of 97 top five finishes. He also served a term on the ECSCRA Board of Directors and of course was the father of two great racers, Larry and Ron Esau. He was also a top notch competitor at Orange Show Speedway and Speedway 605, taking many wins and some championships home from those facilities. As I ponder George's career at Cajon, two nights come quickly to mind. One was off the track and one was on the track. When I started covering ECSCRA back in 1975, I met George at one of the monthly ECSCRA meetings at the Lemon Grove VFW. That night he invited me to stop by his shop and he would show me around. A few days later he took over an hour out of his busy schedule to give me the grand tour of his racing operation and Esau Supply. He made sure he introduced me to everyone who worked for him. I believe it was in 1976 that George was leading the main event at Cajon on night with multi-time champ Pat McIntyre hot on his heels. George was protecting the low groove very efficiently. McIntyre, who was a definite bottom feeder, was going to have to pass on the high side if he wanted to win. Well while George and Pat worried about each other, here comes young Ron Esau up through the pack and he sails around the outside of both his dad and McIntyre to steal the victory. Still not sure all these years later who was more shocked - George or Pat. Of course, now George and Pat can discuss it as they do their bench racing in heaven. No doubt some other Cajonians will join in the conversation. George was a great guy and one of the toughest competitors Cajon ever had. He was also a really super-nice person. RIP George. You will be missed.
