Community Cares Mark Hutto

Sometimes you ask for something and when you get the answer it is not what you wanted to hear.

I was not at Altamont, but I have been flooded with emails concerned with an accident at Altamont involving the No. 22 car of Mark Hutto. So I sent out a request for information.

Unfortunately when the information came in, it was not good. Mr. Hutto lost his life last night, Saturday April 13, 2002.

From one of the people in attendance at the track they said, “On the 5th lap of the AC Delco Sportsman Late Model Main Event, #50 Rick Ruzbarsky blew his motor, and there were a lot of cars bunched up trying to avoid it. At Altamont, the 1/4-mile wall separates the track from the 1/2-mile. Occasionally the 1/2-mile cars will slide into it, but nothing ever like this. #22 Mark Hutto went into the infield trying to avoid everything, and went head on into the wall. You can't slow down in the grass, and there were no skid marks on the asphalt between the grass and the wall, so he never slowed down. So, Mark was going pretty close to full speed. When they got to him, he was unconscious and probably already gone. There were a few ambulances and 2 fire trucks and a helicopter came, but they never took him off the track. They said everyone had to leave first. They never announced to the crowd that Hutto had died. They didn't finish the race. #27 Aaron Days and #2 Brock Monroe were racing for the lead when all this happened, but Aaron was 1st when they put out the red, #28 Rusty Buholz was in 3rd.”

And so what can I say? To those that asked we now have the news we never wanted to hear.

We send our condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Hutto.

I am so, so sorry everyone. There are no words I can say anymore. That I care , that my prayers are with you, that I know how you feel. I don’t know. No one ever really knows how another feels in grief. It hurts badly. And only time and God can make it better. Friends, however, can help ease the pain.

I did not know Mark Hutto, but from what I have been told I missed out on a loving father, and friend. With family of my own out there racing at Altamont I can't help but worry about what ifs. With Mr. Hutto's family those what ifs became realtily. Although he died doing what he loved so dearly I can't even imagine the pain and grief the Hutto family went through. May Mr. Hutto live in our hearts forever and God bless him beyond measure. Now as I have become a regular at the track I pray to God nothing like this will ever happen again. I am so inspired by Nick and Jesse Hutto who race #23 SS at Altamont. They show great courage and love for the late Mr. Hutto and I can only imagine how proud he is of them right now! They are both wonderful drivers and I find it so cool to no them and see then back in the pits. My loved one races in the SS with the two so we are usually parked near them and they are nothing but nice wonderful people. I pray to further my relationship with them. May God bless them and keep them safe with us.

I played softball with mark. He was a great player and a friend. He was also one of the only mechanics I would let work on my truck. I will miss him. My prayers go to all his family and friends. Lord our God, this death recalls our human condition and the brevity of our lives on earth, but for those who believe in your love, death is not the end, nor does it destroy the bonds that you forge in our lives. Bring the light of Christ's resurrection to this time of testing and pain as we pray for our deceased and for those who love them through Christ our Lord.

  • Nathan Kircher, Driver #44 NASCAR super truck
As a young, up and coming racer that puts almost everything behind racing, let me take just a brief moment in our journey of life to say how saddened I am to here of this tragedy. I hope that everyone who hears of this, just take a second to say a prayer for Mark and his loved ones, left behind. It may be over used, and a leap for me to say this, not ever meeting Mark Hutto, but he left us doing what he loved. I primarily race trucks at Madera Speedway, and have only raced one time at Altamont, but this year I will make a few races to Altamont Raceway, and I will have the #22 on my truck. I urge as many of you reading this as possible to do the same. Saddened, Nathan Kircher, Driver #44 NASCAR super truck
  • Eugene Payne and Clare Dowd, Fans
There are many great drivers in our sport. They don't all race in the bigs. They don't all win championships. The greatest are those that inspire with clean but assertive driving and recognize their fans, with humility. Mark was one of these. Mark was extremely talented. He drove with heart and was competitive, always. Yet as one of the fans , just checking things out after the races, we were always made to feel important. If we had a question that could be answered , he would. He had a smile for you and thanked you for being interested. He drove cleanly. He drove competitively. He made the fans feel good, about meeting him. Mark, we will miss you. Our deepest condolences go out to Mark's family. We cry with you, and for your loss. We have lost a favorite driver. Our loss can never match the loss of a family member. Thank you for sharing him with us. Deepest sympathy, Eugene Payne and Clare Dowd, Fans

Family and friends of Mark Hutto. My deepest sympathies over this tragic event. It is indeed a great loss. I have not known Mark Hutto personally but as a race car driver his absence will leave a deep gash in the sport and of course a greater loss of humanity for his family members and friends and fans. May God bless him and may his soul rest in peace.
  • Brandon Graham -- Modesto, CA
I have been a NASCAR fan for many years but I have just started to go to the races about three years ago. I have learned one thing about all of the racers who fly around the short tracks and that is that they are all friends with each other. I didn’t know Mark Hutto but I know that he was into racing and I had seen him race so he was a friend to me. He was one of the many people who go out every weekend and risk their lives to show the people like me a good time. Racing is a sport that is full of many casualties and every driver knows that the possibilities are high, but nobody expects it when it happens. The family of Mark Hutto is feeling a lot of pain right now, but eventually it will subside and hopefully we will see them back at the track because Mark would have wanted them to return. It should put them at ease that Mark Hutto was doing something that he enjoyed so very much at the time of the tragedy. Not every body is given the chance to be doing something that they love with the people that they love at the time of their death. Although it was unexpected this should give the family and friends a small amount of relief. I as a fan who watched people like Hutto race week in and week out feel as though we as race fans owe some sort of gratitude to the racers who we enjoy being around. The racing communities prayers and most deepest sympathies are with the family at this trying time God Bless and hope to see you at the race track soon.
