Community Cares Paul Sigumndson

Paul Sigmundson Passes Away

Paul Sigmundson passed away tonight June 21, 2005. Most of us on the West Coast remember him for his contributions to the southwestern racing communities. He and wife Judy started ORC race radios and supported Off Road Racing in their earlier years before moving on to Tucson Raceway Park during the Winter Heat years. In addition Paul and Judy were servicing the Featherlite Southwest Series radio communications needs ending in May of 1998.

Paul an off road racer himself, he bragged about real racers being off road racers, we would laugh together. He also was an emergency medical technician and communications specialist. For those of us who knew him personally, his passion for racing was overwhelming.

On May 30th, 1998 he and Judy were on their way home from the SWS Colorado event when they were involved in an accident which left Paul a Quadriplegic. This didn't stop Paul he fought the fight and got better while continuing to support the racing community. Just last week he reminded me I needed to tune up my radios while in his hospital bed. Paul was the only person I trusted enough to work on my radio communications! Among the many heroes he loved and admired were none less then Rick Mears, Carl Trimmer, Dale Earnhardt and John Baker to name a few.

Paul will be remembered for his on and off the track love for the sport and his never-ending love for his wife and family. We lost a friend today and heaven got another good man. Forever living in our memories.

Mic opens; You're clear to go up Paul

Paul is doing well, he is in therapy every day. He is still in St. Joe's hospital in Phoenix. In a couple of weeks they will be reassessing him to see if he stays there or if he will be transferred somewhere else. He misses racing folks a lot, so if you think of it, send him a card. Also, if you have any good races on tape, send them to him (even Tour and WW stuff). He doesn't always get to watch the races on TV. It can get sort of boring in the hospital all the time, so a call or card or even a visit would mean a lot. Around 5-8pm is the best time to visit. Call if you're coming and they'll make sure he isn't out chasing the nurses in his wheelchair or something. He really wants to be back at full steam by next year, so keep him in your prayers. ...

Phoenix, Ariz. -Paul had surgery Tuesday to remove a bulging disc in his neck. The doctors felt like the surgery went very well. He has gained more movement in his arms, and he can move his left thumb and forefinger well. He can now move both arms well, but weakly in his right arm because it has been unusable for two months now. Keep praying for him, he is doing well and has even more hope for recovery now than ever. ...

Prayers and Support For Paul Sigumndson

I met Paul 30 years ago when he was driving an ambulance for the City of Flagstaff. I was dispatching overnights at a local call center and he would stop in at all hours of the night just to visit. One night after I'd dispatched him to the reservation to bring a dead body to Flagstaff, I was jolted by the haunting sound of Paul on his loud speaker outdoors howling, "It's cold out heeere..." We became fast friends and stayed in touch for several years. The last I saw of Paul was a visit to stay with him and Judy one weekend about 20 years ago before I packed it in and moved to Pennsylvania. He was such a genuine friend and was there for me or my son any time I asked for his help, and being a single mom struggling to get by, I called on him often. I was so happy for him when he met and married Judy. It appeared he had found his soul mate. Tonight I googled Paul to see if he was still involved with the racing community and am devasted to learn of his death. I will always remember his smile and unassuming manner. Paul was a gentle soul. I look forward to meeting up with him again where engines never fail, horses never stumble and friends never part.

I just found out on Jan 1, 2006 that Paul died! What a shock! What a guy! Let me tell you a bit about Paul! I first met Paul when I was a young deputy sheriff and this big firet truck pulled up near me. I didn't see it, hear or it or nothing! Here was this big ol guy driving it and just laughing at me! I didn't know him! He found it funny that I never saw or heard that big ol' truck. Well, that started years of friendship! We worked together at the Flagstaff Ambulance company in about '75 through '77, drank many beers, laughed a lot! I think he left Flagstaff first and became a welder. I left in 79. We kept somewhat in touch and he did visit me on several occasions and watched him race outside Snowflake on several occasions. Saw him last in about 96 in his business near the Phx airport. Then, lost contact until he called me one year after the accident! Kept in touch, but briefly. Never saw him again! Judy, thank-you for finding my number and calling! Betetr late than never. I am not certain why our lives turn out the way they do, or why people lose contact with each other, but Paul was a light! He was a good friend, lost, but know he is found and I will never forget him and the good times we had living and working together! Sorry Paul that I never came to visit! Forgive me!

I have not had any contact with Paul since I moved to Juneau in 1981, but the guy was always one of my favorite people in the world. He was my ex-husband's best man at our wedding in 1978. I just heard about his death, and then to find out about his accident through this web site, I don't have the words to tell you how sad I am right now. The best always seem to die young. I have too many memories of him: from racing adventures to travel adventures. What a guy he was. Heaven is lucky to have him.

You will be missed. Three weeks ago, during the Baja 500, we were talking about how well our radio's used to work, when Paul was our radio guy. I lost contact with Paul, when he left Off Road Racing, be he was still remembered by many. In fact I read of his passing today, on an Off Road message board GodSpeed Paul Sigumndson

My family and I are praying for Judy and all of Paul's family and friends. Paul was a really solid man, not many folks like him left around these days. He "took me in" back in the old days at TRP, fed me chips and salsa and became one of my best friends out West. The most important thing though that he and I shared was our faith in Christ. I am glad that I can certainly say that he and I will spend eternity together because of this hope. If you missed Paul at TRP, please plan to meet him in heaven!
