| Benny Parsons Hospitalized, Still |
|---|
| Today Benny Parsons is lying in a hospital bed in Intensive Care at Carolinas Medical Center. He has been in hospital since December 26th due to complications from lung cancer treatment.
It feels like a friend is lying there in that bed, not a NASCAR TV commentator, because, Parsons never seemed like a big shot…he always has seemed like a big ol’ friend. When he began announcing races, after trading in his driving career for a yapping career, he was one of the exceptional few that made us all feel special. He appreciates the unique challenges each racer faces and is always supportive of their struggles. Parsons takes the time to walk the pits and talk to us, all of us. Doesn’t matter if it is the track execs or volunteer maintenance, Parsons cares enough to listen to us all. It was Parsons that opened the NASCAR door to West Coast driver Greg Biffle. Parsons was out there in Tucson when Biffle was competing in the NASCAR Winter Heat. Liking what he saw he quickly passed that information on to Jack Roush. Parsons is like that…he is all about sharing, about helping the little guy, if he says he is going to put in a good word…he probably does. Now, might be a good time to say a prayer for one of racing’s greats, for a friend. We need him to get well, pronto! About Benny Parsons: Born in North Carolina in 1941 he began his racing career on the short track but moved up to the ARCA Touring series where he won Rookie-of-the-Year in 1965 and the ARCA Championship in 1968 and 1969. He began racing NASCAR in 1970 and a year later won his NASCAR race at South Boston Virginia Speedway. Within a couple of years he won the championship (1973) and then the Daytona 500 in 1975. When he left NASCAR he became an announcer for ESPN and later he became a commentator on NBC, TNT and the radio, PRN. |
