Spencer Clark and Andrew Phillips Update - 05/22/2006
Former speedway champion killed in car accident

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Nineteen-year-old Spencer Clark, a former track champion at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and a standout on the NASCAR Autozone West Series circuit, died Sunday evening in an automobile accident near Albuquerque, N.M.

According to police reports, Clark was a passenger in a vehicle driving west on Interstate 40 approximately 40 miles east of Albuquerque. The vehicle rolled, killing Clark and 28-year old Andy Phillips of Phoenix. The two were returning from North Carolina and were towing Clark’s race car back to Las Vegas.

“This is a sad day for everyone here at Las Vegas Motor Speedway,” said LVMS general manager Chris Powell. “Spencer was one of the most talented race car drivers to ever come through the Las Vegas area. He certainly had the ability to make it to the highest level of NASCAR competition. Our thoughts and prayers are with his parents, T.J. and Debbie, his sister, Candice, and the rest of his family.”

Clark made his NASCAR Busch Series debut in this part March’s Sam’s Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He started 33rd and finished 35th in that race. Clark also started in the top 10 of all three NASCAR West Series events this season and captured his first pole position in the season-opener at Phoenix. He also recorded a career-best fourth-place finish in that race.

Clark will be remembered as one of the most outstanding racers in Bullring history. He won the 2001 Legends Semi-Pro title and in 2003 was named rookie of the year in the Super Late Model division. He won 12 Super Late Model races at the Bullring, including eight in 2005.

Phillips was a crew member for Clark’s Allegiant Air Racing Team and was a former all-Western Athletic Conference offensive lineman for the University of Hawaii football team.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
