WINSTON WEST NOTES HEADING TO TUCSON
 WINSTON WEST SERIES
 

1998 REVIEW: Rookie Jerry Cain grabbed the Bud Pole Award for the event, turning in the fastest lap among the 35 cars attempting to make the field Kevin Harvick led many of the early laps. the race eventually developed into a battle between Butch Gilliland and Ken Schrader. The pair battled side-by-side through the closing laps, with Gilliland pulling off the pass with two laps remaining.

NOTES OF INTEREST:

**** This is the first of 14 races on the NASCAR Winston West Series scheduled for 1999. The event, which marks the only NWWS visit to Tucson Raceway Park this season, kicks off the 46th season for the series.

**** Prior to 1997, Butch Gilliland dominated NWWS qualifying at Tucson Raceway Park. He won the Bud Pole Award for five of seven races between 1993 and 1995. His fifth-place start in last year's event, however, led to his first victory on the 3(8-mile track.

**** Wayne Jacks has the most NWWS starts at Tucson among active drivers. The 49 yearold competitor has taken the green flag for nine events there.

**** NWWS drivers who celebrate a birthday durIng the month of January include Lance Wade, who turned 29 on Jan. 7; Joe Heath, who tums 34 on Jan. 19; Gary Collins, who turns 39 on Jan, 24: Austin Cameron, who tums 22 also on the 24th.and Jeff Davis, who turns 40 on Jan 29.

STATS OF THE WEEK:

**** The average starting position of NWWS winners at Tucson is 3.3. Four of races at Tucson were won from the Bud Pole position. No driver starting outside of the top 10 has won. ####
