On March 5th, Tropicana Resort & Casinos shows will not only be at their property, but at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway as well, as Phoenix, Arizona's Ron Burns will proudly be displaying the resort's colors.
The Las Vegas facility is already one of his preferred tracks, but Burns is ready to make it his favorite track with a win.
RacingWest: What's your favorite part about racing at the Vegas Motor Speedway and why?
Ron Burns: My favorite thing about racing Las Vegas is both my wife and I get to have fun the same weekend, her in the Casinos, me at the track.
RW: How do you as a driver feel about the greater speeds involved with the big tracks?
RB: The speed at Las Vegas feels pretty fast when you are running alone, but when someone passes you, it feels slow. I think I enjoy the bigger tracks more than the small ones, we give each other more room as a rule.
RW: How much input do you as a driver give your crew chief as far as changes that need to be made on the chassis?
RB: I give my crew chief more info than he pays attention to usually. He takes what I say, then he does what he thinks I need. That comes from a lot of years of talking back and forth, he interpolates it to what the car needs. Davey does a good job with me and I trust him.
RW: How do you feel your shock program will stack up against the other teams?
RB: What do you mean - Shock Program? We call and get info for each track and stay pretty close to that. Until we get a better handle on it with more practice time, that's our best bet.
RW: Is the transition from Bias ply tires used on the short tracks to the radials used on the speedways a difficult one for you? Which tire (Bias ply or Radial) are you most comfortable racing with and why?
RB: On tires I feel the radials are safer, but they sure can whip you around when you get crossed up, easier to recover from bias tires. I think with time I'll get use to them, for now, I don't try too hard to correct a spin, just turn the wheel into it and get it over with.
RW: What tire do you plan to use at the Vegas race, Hoosier or Goodyear and why?
RB: I'm going with Goodyear this trip. I've run both. I think Goodyear has more time on the big tracks and may have the best tire. It's hard to say the 'Cup' tires aren't good enough for me.
RW: With the chance of ARCA drivers, or drivers from other divisions, will that change your driving style when you are racing with them?
RB: My driving style is in question; it changes race to race. I haven't found that spot that moves me ahead without getting me in trouble. My best finishes are when I relax and just take what the race gives me, but I haven't won doing that, so I'm still searching for a style that puts the car up front without putting it out of the race. Everyone makes mistakes on the track, so I don't expect much more from the one driver over another.
RW: With Winston Cup and Busch car owners watching the race and possibly scouting, will you change your driving style to "show off" for the car owners?
RB: I don't have anything to show off to anyone except myself. Racing is a personal thing with me. If I think I did the best I could, then I'm happy. Besides, at 54 years old, I don't think I could get too many offers.
RW: What is your goal, Win? Exposure? Experience?
RB: My goal is to win. To win I need experience. To get experience, I need exposure for my team so we can get the money to win.
RW: Will you be doing any appearances for the fans at Vegas, if so where can they find you?
RB: We will be doing appearances at the Tropicana. They are our co-sponsor for this race and our Taurus will be on display there for 5 or 6 days before the race. We are still working out the details and more about this will be released next week. It's really exciting to have someone like the Tropicana in your corner.
