NOTES OF INTEREST HEADING TO LAS VEGAS
 WINSTON WEST SERIES
 

1998 REVIEW: Kevin Harvick demonstrated his potential early last season, winning the Bud Pole Award and setting the pace en route to winning his first NASCAR Winston West Series event. The victory put him in early contention for the series championship, which he clinched at the same track later in the season. While Harvick was out front in last year's event, it was a scramble for second place. In only his second NWWS start, Tony Toste ran a steady race to secure the runner-up spot, while Jerry Glanville charged to third in the late stages.

RECAPPING TUCSON:

**** Sean Woodside's victory at Tucson was his sixth in the series. With $352,237 in winnings, the Saugus, Calif., competitor is fifth on the list of series career money leaders.

**** In the 11 NWWS races on the paved oval at Tucson, there have been 10 different winners. Ron Hornaday is the only driver to visit victory lane there twice.

**** Fifteen drivers have registered for the Sears Point Raceway Rookie-of-the-Year Award this season. Nine of those rookies qualified for the 28-car field at Tucson.

**** Bill Sedgwick led the most laps at Tucson. He kept the DuPont Stainmaster Carpets Chevrolet out front for 84 of the 200 laps.

**** Jason Small grabbed the early attention by winning the Bud Pole Award. It marked the second consecutive season that a rookie driver was quickest in qualifying at Tucson.

NOTES ABOUT LAS VEGAS:

**** The Orleans 150 is the second of 14 races on the NWWS schedule and the first of two visits by the series to Las Vegas Motor Speedway this season. It is one of six superspeedway races slated in 1999.

**** This event is part of a NASCAR triple-header weekend at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Sam’s Town 300 NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division race is set for Saturday, March 6, while NASCAR Winston Cup Series drivers will compete in the Las Vegas 400 on Sunday, March 7.

**** There have been five different Bud Pole winners in the five NASCAR Winston West Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. They include Ken Schrader, Sammy Potashnick, Kenny Wallace, Kevin Harvick and Mike Chase. Two of the five, Potashnick and Chase, are entered in this event.

**** Four drivers have competed in all five NWWS races at LVMS -- Kevin Culver, Scott Gaylord, Butch Gilliland and Wayne Jacks. All four are expected to enter this event.

**** Four NWWS drivers have also entered the NASCAR Winston Cup Series event. The Four who plan to attempt to qualify for the Las Vegas 400 are Gilliland, Austin Cameron, Jeff Davis and Ron Burns

**** Among the entries for The Orleans 150 are two NASCAR Winston Cup Series drivers. Jerry Nadeau is entered in Harry Melling’s Cartoon Network Ford and Ricky Craven is expected to be in the Hollywood Video Ford of Scott Barbour.

**** Another driver slated for double duty at Las Vegas is Bobby Hamilton Jr. He will make his debut in the NASCAR Winston West Series on Friday and is also entered in the Sam’s Town 300 on Saturday.

**** Hornaday, a two-time champion in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, will be back in action in the NASCAR Winston West Series at Las Vegas. Hornaday, who nearly won the series title in 1994, is entered in the Napa/Fluidyne Pontiac of Bernie Hilber.

**** Jerry Glanville is also among the entries for The Orleans 150. Glanville, who competed in three NWWS events in 1998, finished third in last year’s event on the 1.5-mile superspeedway.

**** A Chevrolet has been in victory lane for all five NWWS races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

**** Drivers who celebrated birthdays during the month of February included Doc Faustina, who turned 60 on the 1st; Billy Kann, who turned 37 on the 4th; Steve Sellers, who turned 50 on the 9th; Billy Turner, who turned 43 on the 10th; John Metcalf, who turned 51 on the 14th; Wayne Jacks who turned 50 on the 21st; and Butch Gilliland, who turned 42 on the 25th. Drivers celebrating birthdays in the first half of March include Rod Bennett, who turns 46 on the 6th, and Eric Ash, who turns 28 on the 10th.

STAT OF THE WEEK:

**** The average starting position of NWWS winners at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is 4.8 Two of the five races were won from the Bud Pole position.
