BAKERSFILED, CA -- Mike Alsup of Bakersfield picked up his first win in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Late Model Stock Cars when the leaders ended their bids for the winner circle honors hugging the Turn One wall. Alsup qualified for Fast Time Trophy Dash the "Prime Equipment 75" but spent most of the race chasing Jason Small and Kevin Vernon of Bakersfield and Greg Pursley of Sun Valley. Small faught off hard charges from Vernon for 53 laps then got just loose enough that Vernon drove on by. Meanwhile Pursley had passed Alsup on lap 35 then got under Vernon on 44 only to spin and move to the back. By lap 68 Pursley was side by side Vernon when Small wavered and chased Vernon past Small. Pursley might have tried for the win just a little to much at the wrong time. He got under Vernon sending both to the wall, igniting flames when they hit. Both drivers were out and only hot tempered under the fire suits. That left the win open for Small, but dodging the leader's spin he smoked the tires and broke a rear end and had to come into the pits. Alsup led the last four laps taking the win in the 3rd race of the series. In the NASCAR Winston Racing Series ShorTrack action, Mike Alexander and Kevin Jordan quickly moved from their inverted back of the pack positions to battle for the lead, but as they battled each other Tony Alvarez whizzed on by on lap 10 and never looked back for the rest of the 25-lap event. Alvarez had first win of the season. Daren Blanton, Mike Alexander, Gary Dutton and JR Garcia finished out the field. The American Race Truck Series made their first appearance at Mesa Marin. Val Cummings of West Covina had the truck to beat. Taking the lead on lap 2, he was challenged by Mike Thomas of San Marcos until Thomas got him just loose enough to charge by on lap 35 and keep the lead for the last five laps. Terry Young of las Vegas, Greg Schneider of Mesa, AZ, and Jason Morsheiser of Glendora rounded out top five. In the California Asphalt Super Modifieds, Dave Ussett of Kerman dominated the first half of the 40-lap event, but after the mid-break, he was hard charged by Jim Tartaglia of Reedley, who got past him and took the win. Jim Burns of Fresno, Lance Jackson of Kingsburg and Willie Northamer of Fresno finished off the top five. In the 911 Race for Youth Series, it was the Bakersfield Police Department that was able to get past the Bakersfield City Fire Department by barely a front bumper at the finish line. In the Women's Racing Series, Mary Vernon picked up her first win when she dove low under Carol Lynn Jordon and picked off the lead. Sally Irwin made a strong bid for the lead, but spun herself out giving Vernon the chance to work on Jordan. May 1, Mesa Marin will re-configuer the race track and even add a bunch of dirt to the infield to feature motorcycles for the first time at the 1/2 mile asphalt oval. The Super Tts will include Twin Moto Main, Terminator Dash for Cash and Stunts. Then on May 8 the NASCAR Winston Racing Series returns for the Hall Ambulance 75.
