REID HOLDS OFF MAUPIN FOR VICTORY
BY DON MARTIN II
ANTIOCH, CA After a scary moment in traffic cost him the lead to Mel Maupin, Bart Reid repassed him and held him off to win the 25 lap All Pro Series Dirt Modified feature Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The win paid Reid $600 aboard his West Coast Motorsports Cobra Chassis and made him the only repeat winner so far this year. Maupinsettled for a career best $300 second place finish aboard his Dunn-Wright Appliance Services sponsored Harris Chassis as Chad Chadwick racked up several passing points from the back of the pack to take the point lead with a third place finish in his Pro Chassis. A tricky racing surface kept Promoter John Soares Jr. busy on the grater working the quarter-mile clay oval into shape all night long.
Reid and Maupin shared the front row for the 20 car Dirt Modified feature, and Reid raced into an early lead over Maupin. A Turn 2 pileup forced a lap two caution flag, and Reid continued to lead Maupin and Mark Schrader on the restart. Dennis Furia Sr. and Chris Wadsworth moved in to battle Schrader for third, but a tangle between the trio on the front stretch of the eighth lap left Wadsworth facing the wrong way. Reid picked inside on the restart option and continued to lead Maupin and Furia. B Main transfer Chadwick gained fourth on lap 11 with Schrader's spin. Working heavy traffic in Turn 4 of the 17th, Reid got caught up in one of their tangles. Maupin led the pack back to the caution flag as Reid quickly recovered in second. The crash eliminated Bert Elworthy. Maupin wisely chose the inside on the restart option, but he had drifted up off the line with Reid forcing a side by side battle. By the time they exited Turn 2 of the 18th lap, Reid had the lead again as Chadwick was third. There was no stopping Reid from there as he sped to victory ahead of Maupin, Chadwick, Furia, Chris Elby and Mark Hannum.
There were 24 Dirt Modifieds on hand for this event, and a thrilling last turn pass gained Schrader a heat race victory ahead of Reid. Elworthy, Elby and Wadsworth were other eight lap heat winners, and Wadsworth won a thrilling battle with Elworthy for another trophy dash victory. Hard luck racer Jerry Harless won the ten lap B Main ahead Chadwick and Debi Clymens.

LAVELL WINS THIRD, GARDNER NEW POINT LEADER
BY DON MARTIN II
ANTIOCH, CA Despite a few scary moments during the race, Jimmy Lavell impressed with his third 20 lap Pure Stock feature victory of the season Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. Lavell had earlier won his heat race and is actually trying to sell the car as he makes plans to move up to the Wingless Spec Sprint division. Rich Gardner Jr. made a late race pass to finish second and take the point lead as Jim Robbins was a third.
Dean Plambeck and Robert Ackerman drew front row starts for the 20 car Pure Stock feature with Plambeck setting the early pace in his Dodge. A lap two restart saw Lavell make his move around Plambeck for the lead, and Robbins gained second a lap later. Gardner took third from Plambeck on lap eight. Lavell got sideways in Turn 2 of the eighth lap, allowing Robbins to race into the lead. However, a low pass in Turn 2 of the ninth lap regained Lavell the lead. The leaders were in heavy traffic in a race that only had one yellow flag. A low pass in Turn 2 of the final lap gained Gardner second from Robbins. In Turn 4, Lavell nearly got taken out by traffic as Gardner closed in quickly. However, the veteran Lavell kept his cool and brought it home to victory as Gardner was a happy second in front of Robbins, the steady Plambeck and Keith Brown Jr. Eight lap heat races went to rookie Dennis Leis, Todd Clymens, Robbins and title hopefuls Lavell and Gardner. Incoming point leader Jeremy Prince was running his last race for about a month as he prepares for a trip to Alaska, and he came from the back of the pack to win the 12 lap B Main ahead of John Gordon and Ray Deitrick.

FRASER SCORES FIRST CAREER VICTORY
BY DON MARTIN II
ANTIOCH, CA...Holding off the pressure of veteran Kahl Rodriques during the latter stages of the race, Billy Fraser scored his first career 20 lap All Pro Series Modified Street Stock feature victory Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The win paid $150 to the second year racer aboard his Antioch Mufflers sponsored Cline Camaro as Chris Harless was second ahead of back of the pack starter Gary Hetrick.
Rodrigues and Jimmy Duke shared the front row for the 20 car Modified Street Stock feature, and Duke paced one lap before an inside move down the back stretch of the second lap gained Rodrigues the lead. Fraser settled into second, and an inside move doen the front stretch of the third lap gained Fraser the lead. Harless was third ahead of David Rosa on lap seven as a red flag flew for a fire in the Andy Angelo car. Fortunately, he was not injured, but Angelo joined Jim Capoot, Mike Mendenhall and Eric Watts on the sidelines. Fraser chose the inside on the restart and continued to lead Rodrigues and Harless. A caution flag flew on lap ten for Duke, and fourth place Rosa pitted right before the restart with a right rear flat tire. Fraser led Rodrigues and Harless on the restart. Rodrigues briefly took the lead from Fraser, but Fraser had the lead by the completion of the lap. When Rodrigues lost power on the back stretch, the race was ended after 16 laps, and Fraser scored the victory ahead of Harless, Hetrick, Mikey Slaney, Dennis Moore and Ronnie Fuller.
There were 20 Modified Street Stocks on hand for this event, and Fraser, point leader Tim Spurgeon and Ron Condon Jr. were heat winners. Rosa took advantage of a Mendenhall mistake to win the final eight lap heat race.
