ANTIOCH SPEEDWAY JULY 12TH RECAP

WADSWORTH SWEEPS AT ANTIOCH SPEEDWAY
BY DON MARTIN II
ANTIOCH, CA Winning a good battle with the surprising rookie Tim Kennady, Chris Wadsworth gained the point lead in the championship race with his victory in the 25 lap All Pro Series Dirt Modified main event Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The win capped a clean sweep of dash, heat and feature for Wadsworth in the Buzz Inn Harris Modified and paid $600. Dennis Furia Sr. made a late move into a $300 second place finish in his Larkins Chassis and Kennady was a career best third in his Pro Chassis.

Kennady and Rick Karnes drew front row starts for the 21 car Dirt Modified feature, and the race had to be restarted as Nick Caughman Jr. stalled on the back stretch. Karnes led Kennady and incoming point leader Chad Chadwick on the restart, and 12th starting Wadsworth was already fourth on lap two. When Karnes pushed exiting Turn 2 of the fifth lap, Kennady raced by for the lead. A Turn 4 pass on lap six gained Wadsworth third. An outside move on the front stretch of the tenth lap gained Wadsworth second from Karnes, and a lap 11 caution flag flew for Tobi Madden. Kennady chose the inside for the restart option and continued to lead Wadsworth and Karnes, but a high move in Turn 4 of the 13th lap gained Wadsworth the lead. Madden and Brian Curran tangled for a lap 16 caution flag. Wadsworth chose the outside for the restart, and as they raced out of Turn 2, the inside running Kennady had the lead after slight contact in Turn 2. However, a major pileup on the back stretch forced a red flag and negated the pass. Five cars were eliminated in the melee, and Mark Hannum was checked by the track paramedics after walking to the ambulance with a little assistance. There were several cautions and restarts, but Wadsworth remained in control of the race and held off Kennady's every advance. 21st starter Bart Reid had just worked his way into the top five when contact sent him into the Turn 1 exit wall and out of the event on lap 22. Kennady's last lap bid to regain second saw him get sideways as Furia raced by. At the finish, it was Wadsworth, Furia, Kennady, Mark Garner and Don Shelton. The Dirt Modifieds ran four qualifying heats with Kennady winning a good battle with Bert Elworthy for his eight lap victory. A last turn pass around Chadwick gained Chris Elby the win in his heat. Karnes and Wadsworth won the other heats with Wadsworth the dash winner.

SPURGEON, CHAVES CONTINUE ANTIOCH DOMINATION
BY DON MARTIN II
ANTIOCH, CA Taking the lead when Daniel Hodges broke a rear end, point leader Tim Spurgeon scored his sixth 20 lap All Pro Series Modified Street Stock feature victory Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The win paid $150 to Spurgeon aboard his Kleen Blast sponsored car as Billy Fraser finished second ahead of Chris Harless. Leading every lap from a front row start, point leader Mark Chaves won his third straight 20 lap Dwarf Car main event. Mike Schwarz was a strong second ahead of Scott Merrell.

Todd Tadiello and Bill Bihn drew front row starts for the 20 car Modified Street Stock feature, but Hodges took the early lead ahead of Tadiello and Mike Mendenhall. A lap seven caution flag flew for Gary Hetrick. Tadiello pitted from second. Hodges picked the outside on the restart option and maintained the lead over Mendenhall and Harless. A lap ten caution flag slowed the pace again. Hodges picked the outside on the restart and David Rosa followed him on outside for second before a lap 11 yellow flag for Mikey Slaney and Mike Jacobsen in Turn 4. With Hodges again opting for the outside, he and Rosa ran the restart lap side by side, but Rosa hit a rut on the bottom of the track exiting Turn 4 and slammed Hodges into the front stretch wall. Rosa led Hodges and 12th starter Spurgeon back to the lap 14 caution flag. Track officials sent Rosa to the back of the pack for his part in the incident, putting Hodges back in front ahead of Spurgeon and Fraser. Hodges chose the inside for this restart and continued to lead Spurgeon and Fraser, but he stalled in Turn 4 with a broken rear end a lap later as Spurgeon led Fraser and Harless back to the caution flag. From there, Spurgeon was not to be denied and he increased his point lead with the victory ahead of Fraser, Harless, Eric Watts and Mikey Slaney. Chaves drew the outside front row for the 15 car Dwarf Car feature and set the early pace ahead of David Hays Jr. and Scott Merrell. A low pass in Turn 1 of the second lap gained Merrell second with Schwarz gaining third. Schwarz took over second on a lap six restart and the top three would remain unchanged for the duration of the race. Rusty Flores took fourth from Hays on lap 12 and hard luck raced Martin Whittingham gained fifth on lap 19. On the final lap, Chaves' motor began to sour on him, but he hit slower traffic at the right time in the final turn and used it to repel an attempt by Schwarz to get by. At the finish, it was Chaves, Schwarz, Merrell, Flores and Whittingham.

The Modified Street Stocks had 23 cars for the night and ran four qualifying heats with Rosa and Rob Waldrop getting wins in their six lappers from the second row. Pole sitter Mendenhall won his heat, and Spurgeon used a low pass in Turn 3 of the final lap to win his heat ahead of Tadiello. Returning Lonnie Fish won the 10 lap B Main after a spin out incident sent Al Munther to the rear with early leader Dan Newberry. Hays and Chaves won Dwarf Car heats from the second row with Merrell winning his from the last row.

GONDERMAN CHARGES TO VICTORY, GAINS POINT LEAD
BY DON MARTIN II
ANTIOCH, CA Already the State and Petaluma point leader, Dan Gonderman made a charge from back in the pack to score his second 20 lap All Pro Series Wingless Spec Sprint feature victory of the season Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The win paid Gonderman $400 aboard his Main Machine sponsored Sprinter and regained him the Antioch point lead. Rookie Eric Ferreira made an impressive debut with a $200 second aboard his Red Wing Shoes sponsored Sprinter as Larry Teixeira was an impressive third.

Duane Rogers and Kenny Rines shared the front row of the Spec Sprint main event as Gonderman started 12th. Rines set the early pace ahead of Travis Berryhill and Jim Perry Jr. A low pass in Turn 4 of the second lap gained Perry second. Rines spun out of the lead in Turn 4 of the fourth lap with Perry leading Berryhill and Gonderman back to the caution flag. Track officials called Perry for a jump start on the initial green and put him to the rear of the pack. This gave Berryhill the lead ahead of Gonderman and Teixeira. Incoming point leader Andy Archer blew a motor and retired on lap eight with the unhappy Perry also pulling into the infield. Berryhill got out of shape in Turn 4 of the 11th lap, taking a wild ride through the infield and back onto the track behind new leader Gonderman. Berryhill was black flagged for speeding through the infield with Teixeira, 13th starter Ferreira and Don O'Keefe Jr. now battling for second. An inside pass in Turn 4 of the 14th lap gained O'Keefe third from Ferreira, but Ferreira raced back by on the back stretch to regain the spot on lap 16. An outside move down the front stretch of the 19th lap gained Ferreira second, but there was no stopping Gonderman as he sped to victory ahead of Ferreira, Teixeira, O'Keefe and Ricky Brophy IV.

In heat race action, Roy Greer charged from the back of the pack to score an impressive victory ahead of rookie Rich Butler's solid second place finish. Ferreira won his six lap heat race after passing early leader Terry DeCarlo Sr. and Perry scored a heat race victory ahead of Archer in the third heat. Veteran Jim Booth made his first and last Wingless Spec Sprint start as he has sold his car to Dalton DeOrnellas. The Sanomauro Racing Products of San Jose $50 certificate for the "Hard Luck" driver of the night went to Eric Mentch, who had motor problems in his heat and missed the feature. The Wingless Spec Sprints return to Antioch this week before heading back to Petaluma Speedway on July 3rd.
