PURSLEY SWEEPS WEEKEND

Bakersfield CA -- Greg Pursley's Community Recycling #98 was set up to win all Father's Day Weekend. After winning the NASCAR Winston Racing Series main event last night at Irwindale, Pursley came north to Bakersfield and made it two-for two for the weekend, winning his first main event at Mesa Marin Raceway. He started on the pole by the luck of the draw and jumped out front for an early lead that he never relinquished.

Kevin Vernon planned to give him some trouble, but on lap 5 Vernon did a 2X360 after getting caught in some fluid on the track. Vernon was able to wind his way back to 4th but ran out of time before the end of the NAPA Auto Parts 50. At one point he maneuvered a 3-wide trick going for the position. Barry Bradshaw got under Charlie Watler lifting his rear end and setting him back down on the track. Vernon drove on by and Watler was able to pit and return, but Bradshaw was out for the night. Then on lap 42 Vernon took the position from Mike Duncan and the battle was on for 2nd with Mike Alsup. Vernon went high going into turn 3 but had to back out and time ran out.

Mike Alsup and Mike Duncan dueled for 2nd and 3rd place. Early in the race, they went 4-laps side-by-side then Duncan backed off and that's where they finished. Alsup, Duncan, Vernon, and Boyd Magdall from Las Vegas completed the top 5. Magdall had his best finish of the year.

In the NASCAR Winston Racing Series ShorTrack Street Stocks Mike White pulled off another win making it four for the season. Coming from the back of the pack, White passed Mike Riale on lap 10 of the 25 lap main event. Riale cruised to keep his 2nd place for the night. Points leader Mike Alexander was also on the move and found his 3rd place position by lap 8. Daren Blanton, who won last week made his way up to finish 4th, but it took longer leaving him no time to battle with the leader. Brian Richardson rounded out the top five with his best finish this season.

In Modified Stocks Danny Collins may have learned every driving trick in the book from former track champion Gene Fife of Tehachapi, but he missed one tonight. Fife helped build the points' leader's #19 and often crews with Collins, but tonight all Collins saw of Fife was the streak as he zoomed by and then his rear bumper for the rest of the 25-lap main event. On lap 6 Fife passed Collins, who had moved up to 2nd place then took the position from Eric Sunness of West Hills. Dave Howell of Rosamond seemed to be another threat, but his #26 was a handful and he had to settle for 4th. Jeff Smith, former Street Stock Champion, recently started competing in the Modified Stock Series. By lap 21, he was getting serious wishing for more laps to catch the leaders, but he settled for 3rd.

In the Campus Motorsports -- the High School Series Kern Valley was able to win the battle with North High. They went several laps side-by-side of the 12-lap main event until North looped it on the back straight giving the edge to Kern Valley. Centennial's, Trina Eggleston was able to hold onto 2nd place finishing 3rd.

The duel of the night was between Chief Ron Fraze of the Bakersfield Fire Dept. and Commander Stan Moe of the Kern County Sheriff's Dept. Fraze had come out to burn rubber and finish #1. He jumped out to an early lead and thought it was clear sailing to the winner's circle, but Moe kept moving up until he caught him. The last three laps they did some door-knocking and Fraze finish only a bumper ahead of Moe. Officer David Brantley finished 3rd for the Bakersfield Police, Chief Dan Clark safely finished 4th to the satisfaction of "crew chief for the night" Sharon Clark and Deputy Chief Don Menzmer brought up the rear for the CHP.

The Women's Racing Series saw Mary Vernon take an early lead and nearly lap the field by the end of the 12-lap main event. Sally Irwin finished 2nd and Julie Green, a recent grad and alternate driver for the Centennial High Motorsports #97 finished 3rd. Michelle Kelley had no where to go when points leader Carol Lynn Jordan looped her #92 in turn 3. Both had to go to the pits for the night.

Mesa Marin Raceway takes next week off and will return for the "Wrangler Firecracker 100 presented by A.B.Dick/IPS on July 3, including a spectacular fireworks show. Tickets are $8 for general admission with kids 12 and under free.
