TWO NASCAR WINSTON WEST SHORT TRACKS TO BE TELEVISED

SCOTTS VALLEY, California -- The close door-to-door, fender-rubbing action of NASCAR Winston West Series short-track racing will be featured, as plans to televise two series events have been announced.

Officials at Portland (Ore.) Speedway announced the NASCAR Winston West Series race on the historic 1/2-mile Aug. 14 will be televised to a national audience on Speedvision cable network. The 200-lap event will air on a tape-delay basis.

Plans were also announced to televise the Bank One 250 at Rocky Mountain Raceways in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Sept. 6 event, which will be the inaugural NASCAR Winston West Series race on the 3/8-mile oval, will be broadcast on KUTV Television -- the CBS affiliate in Utah, according to RMR officials. It will also air on a tape-delay basis.

"We're excited about the opportunity to showcase a NASCAR Winston West Series short track event such as this to a national audience," said Craig Armstrong, president of Portland Speedway. "This series has a long heritage of short track racing that dates back to when NASCAR began sanctioning the Pacific Coast Late Model circuit 46 years ago. Portland has been a regular stop for the series since 1956 and has featured some of the most exciting racing in the history of the circuit."

Drivers who have won NASCAR Winston West Series events at Portland Speedway include Bobby Allison, Ken Schrader, Hershel McGriff, Derrike Cope and Chad Little, Jim Bown and Rick Carelli. The list of winners also includes former series champions Bill Sedgwick, Mike Chase and Butch Gilliland. All three are running the full series schedule this year.

The first visit by the series to Rocky Mountain Raceways, meanwhile, promises to be a special event, as the West's oldest stock car racing circuit visits Utah for the first time. The inaugural race is expected to attract a lot of interest from competitors. RMR officials have announced that NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Ken Schrader will compete in the event.
