This time last week we asked driver Shane Biles what he was going to do to improve his finish at South Sound. He told us he was bringing a different car, a different motor and was going to pass every car on the track. Well folks, he kept his word and won the Northwest Tour race at South Sound.
Now with that first win in the books. Biles wanted to thank his crew for getting him there. The entire crew has been working on the car out of their love of the sport and their belief in their driver. Sometimes people forget the guys behind the scene. But not Biles. He is the first to say he owes it all to them!
If you are at the race be sure to stop by the pits and say hi to Shane and his crew. Fans mean a lot to this team and they appreciate the support and enthusiasm of the fans!
RacingWest: What was it like to win your first race?
ShaneBiles: I was a lot of fun and a big relief to finally win a tour race.
RW: Who do you want to thank?
SB: I want to thank the crew. Our team is 100% volunteer. We don't even have enough money to pay their pit passes so these guys deserve all of the credit.
RW: At what point in the race did you feel like you were going to win the thing?
SB: I knew we could win when we pulled in the gate. The car has been fast every time we've run it so I was very confident.
RW: Not all of your fans have a chance to see the Tri-Cities racing facility. Could you explain the characteristics of the track.
SB: It's really different because it's a tri-oval and all 3 corners are different. It's like a road coarse with all left hand turns.
RW: What does it take at that track to get to the front?
SB: You have to have a car that works very well. Traction is marginal so if your car is off a little you will be sliding everywhere.
RW: Is qualifying up front any more important at that track than the others you race on?
SB: It's very important at all of the tracks we run. The better you qualify, the less cars you have to pass.
RW: Who is the one driver you see as being the driver to beat at Tri-Cities?
SB: Chris Hart. He won the last race there and is always fast there.
RW: The season is nearing an end. With only 2 races remaining are you going for the win or points and why?
SB: We are going for the win that's just the way we race. We will let the points fall where they do.
RW: This was definitely an interesting season for racing. What has happened this season that surprised you the most?
SB: What surprised me the most is that we've blown up 2 engines. Over the winter we updated our engine program and thought we had built some extra reliability into them.
RW: How happy have you been with your performance this season?
SB: Overall, pretty happy. We would have like a little more consistency but we are getting better.
RW: Do you have any plans for next season?
SB: NOPE! We'll just have to see what happens this winter.
RW: What do your fans mean to you? Do you remember that first autograph? What were you thinking? How did you feel inside?
SB: The fans that come to our races are great. They are very supportive and we love to see them. I don't remember the first one but I do remember it feeling real weird people wanting my autograph.
