NATHAN WULFF WINS COMMUNITY RECYCLING 75

Mesa Marin Raceway’s October Classic will be a fond memory for the Wulff family as Nathan Wulff of Escondido takes home a 4th place finish in Friday night’s Rio Bravo 100 and follows it up tonight by taking the #72 Ultra Wheels SPEC Truck to the winner’s circle.

On the other hand, Joe Herold of Poway came up short of a win in both main events after leading the field for most of the laps on Friday and 40 of 75 on Saturday.

Herold and Wulff jumped to the one-two positions when the green flag came down. But Wulff was not willing to settle for 2nd place. He kept pressing until he got the advantage on lap 40 and took the lead. As the battle for the lead played out Vince Little of Clovis and Darren Michels of Victorville did the dance for 3rd and 4th place with Dave Blankenship of Stevenson Ranch knocking hard at their back bumpers.

When Herold spun out on lap 65 new players were added to the top five. Tim Clark of Beaumont and Jon Campbell of Laguna Hills came to the party. Curtis Malins jumped into 5th for a short time until he bobbled and had to settle for 10th giving Frank Steiner of Perris the top five position.

The final five was Wulff, Blandenship, Clark, Campbell and Steiner.

In other action, Rick Pearce made it two in a row in the Super TT Motorcycles. Points leader Don Canet jumped to an early lead in the 12 lap main event. Pearce was in 3rd behind Casey Yarrow. In the turn 4 jump Pearce learned a new trick. He motored into the jump deep and passed Yarrow on the jump. It worked on lap 3 so he tried it again on Canet and it worked again. Pearce had all the muscle. He extended his lead length and rode it home for another hometown winner’s circle appearance.

The Super TT Motorcycles and Ultra Wheels SPEC Trucks were the opening events on the 3rd night of the 4-day festival of speed featuring the NASCAR Southwest Series. The battle was between NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver Ron Hornaday and points leader Kevin Busch. The 21 year old beat the master out of the pits midway through the race and held the lead to win the Community Recycling 200.

On Sunday Hornaday will race again in the NASCAR Winston West Re-Refined Oil 250 preceeded by the Late Model Stock Car Re-Refined Oil Race of Champions. Top 5 points leaders from Las Vegas Speedway, El Cajon, Tuscon, Mesa Marin, Irwindale, and Orange Show were invited to compete for posted awards of $15,000. Former Late Model Champions from the tracks, including another NASCAR Craftsman Truck driver, Kevin Harvick, were also invited to compete. Instead of qualifying the competitors will draw for position in the winner’s circle starting at 1pm.

Tickets are still available at $15, $28 and $36. Race time begins officially at 2pm. For more information contact, Mesa Marin Raceway.
