Veteran Walker Evans ended his farewell tour today at Las Vegas Motor Speedway by winning his twentieth off road championship.
Evans took the CORR/Exxon Superflo Series title by one point over Scott Douglas who had suspension problems early in the race and finished ninth.
"I am elated," said the 60-year-old driver, "I am totally blown away. As you can tell by my voice, I am a little choked up. I am so happy for the Walker Evans team. This is my gift to them. It couldn't have come out better if I had written the book myself."
Evans finished second to Jack Flannery in the Championship Off Road Racing Pro-4 division race. He passed Jack's son Jamey with two laps to go giving him enough points to jump from third to first in the standings. He took the title by one point over Scott Douglas.
"I was mortified when Jamey came blowing by me," said Evans about a late race pass by Jamey Flannery. "We didn't give up. I am just elated that I ran a strong, hard race and finished second. It is perfect. I couldn't be happier to have Jack Flannery right there with me. I would give up a race win any day to get a championship.
"I have been at it a long time. I love bouncing through the bumps and jumps, and I love the competition of it. Yes, I am going to miss it."
Las Vegan Rob MacCachren was the points leader going into the weekend. Due to mechanical problems, he finished 10th in the race dropping him to sixth-place in the points standings.
In the Pro-2 division, Scott Taylor defeated Dan Vanden Heuvel for the race win. Taylor had already clinched the championship at Stafford Motor Speedway on Oct. 10.
In the Pro-Lite division, Johnny Greaves, who had also clinched the title earlier this month, put on an incredible show with Jason Crowder. Greaves took the victory.
Fourteen more championships will be decided at Las Vegas Motor Speedway by next Sunday. The Pennzoil World of Outlaws ends their season with three nights of racing on LVMS' half-mile dirt oval Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. At the end of the week, the American Le Mans closes out their year on the speedway's 2.25-mile road course. They will race Nov. 5-7.
