Jim Pettit and the HotWood 03 team head to Tucson with one thing in mind-extending their current lead in the points.
This race will be the 13th race of the 14-race season for the AutoZone Southwest series. The 150-lap event is set to start at 2:00 p.m. this Sunday with the grandstands opening at 11:30. Tucson Raceway has always been a great venue to watch a race, and the fans will surely see a great show this weekend.
I talked with the current points leader earlier this week, Pettit was eager to get to Tucson saying,“ We always enjoy going to Tucson. The fans are great, and we have had some great runs there in the past. We hope to extend our current lead in the points, and we will have to have a great day to accomplish that goal. Raudman has been good all year, and I am sure his team is working as hard as we are to win the championship.”
It has been four years since Pettit won a championship, but none have been as big as the one he is currently chasing. The 1984 NASCAR Rookie of the Year wants more than anything to be the 2004 AutoZone Southwest Series Champion. For 20 years Pettit has honed his skills on pavement and dirt tracks all over the country, and all 03 fans are hoping it pays off here in the next two weeks.
Jim currently has a 39-point lead over 2001 champion Craig Raudman. His three wins, eight top 5’s, and 10 top tens lead all competitors in every category. The 03 has an average finish of 5.5 this year, and will need to maintain that consistency to take top honors at this years banquet in December.
The Jim Pettit Racing team would like to recognize California HotWood, DPI, LRP, and Top of the Hill Performance. The team would also like to recognize all of their families, friends, and fans.
