Ron Hornaday Jr. means one thing to the folks back East, but out here in the West he is known more as one of us. We still refer to his running the inside of the inside groove as the Hornaday line and most of us remember him more for his beating and banging and hard charging to the win than anything else.
Thinking of Hornaday having a press agent writing releases for him is still surprising. Not that he didn’t and doesn’t have the talent to be where he is, it is just hard not to remember him tearing it up at Saugus or cutting corners at Mesa.
And yea, I guess you have to admit, there were plenty of fans in the West that he angered with some of his bump and run techniques.
Funny, that has all changed now. Hornaday has gone from a driver that half the fans in the west cheered and the other half booed to a star that just about all of us in the West cheer on.
This weekend Hornaday will be back at his old stomping grounds racing his # No. 47 ACXIOM CHEVY in the Silverado 150 at Phoenix International Raceway. Chances are real good he will get a top-ten and a win is certainly not out of the question. He is a two-time winner in the NCTS at this track and in nine of his previous NCTS starts at Phoenix he has never finished out of the top-ten.
Said Hornaday, "I can't wait to strap into the Big & Rich Silverado at Phoenix. PIR is one of my all-time favorite tracks and I've been fortunate to win several races there and I plan on adding another victory for Chevrolet.
“I know that the Morgan-Dollar crew put bigger fender braces on the Big & Rich Silverado, so that I can let my old Buddy Jack Sprague know that I'm back. This race is going to be a lot of fun. The race fans in Phoenix don't want to miss this one."
Sounds like the same ol’ Hornaday is ready to go all out for the checkers. If he wins it will be his 3rd NCTS at PIR and will be received with lots of enthusiasm and yes, his fans in the West will be cheering him on!![]()
