BAKERSFIELD, California -- Burney Lamar, of W. Sacramento, CA. is among the entries for this weekends "Copper World Classic" at the one mile Phoenix International Raceway. Entered in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division Southwest Series race of the four-race program, Lamar will be driving the same blue and white #1 Groeniger/HPS/Tri-C/Victory Circle Chassis Chevrolet that he drove to a fourth place finish in last years Series point standings.
Teaming up once again with successful car owners Les and Sue DenHerder, of Bakersfield, CA., the 24 year old Lamar will be starting his fifth season in the Southwest Series. During the previous four seasons, he has finished in the top ten in the Series point standings all four years, his best being second in 2002. He was the Series rookie of the year in 2001, and has twice won the year ending Bud Pole Award for having the most Bud poles in a season. He also has three career victories.
In last years final event of the season, the prestigious NASCAR Toyota All Star Showdown, featuring forty of the finest short-track drivers from around the country, Lamar won his qualifying race and finished third in the 125 lap feature. As for this upcoming event, he said, "I'm hoping we can take some of that success with us to Phoenix this weekend. We've had some pretty good runs at PIR, and with my crew chief, Mark Lundgren, and most of my team from last year still together, I'm ready to start a new season".
This weekends Southwest Series program is scheduled to get underway with practice early
Saturday afternoon: qualifying early Sunday morning, and the feature 75 lap race set for shortly
