MONROE, Washington --Last seasons champions fared well on the weekly NASCAR opener at Evergreen Speedway. Two defending champions won their respective mains. John Zaretzke won the NASCAR Speedway Chevrolet Super Stock main. NASCAR’s Mini-Stock main winner Nat Barber starts back atop the points list.

Steve Ptacek looking to win his first championship won the NASCAR Les Schwab Tires Bomber main and the Northwest Legend main winner was Matt Barrett. Steve Peters won the fan vote and is the first ever Trailer Race winner.

With no warm up laps do to a late arrival, last year’s NASCAR Speedway Chevrolet Super Stock Champion, John Zaretzke had a slow qualifying attempt. He started the 50-lap main from the eleventh position. On lap 2 avoiding spinning race cars he moved to second behind race leader Dan Beecher. A heated dual between Zaretzke and Beecher ensued for a few laps. Zaretzke finally got the lead and was cruising until Shane Harding pulled alongside mid way through the main. Harding spun off the track on the slightly damp surface as the rain moved in. Zaretzke finished the race with Jason Fraser, who recovered from an earlier spin, close behind. Kelly Mann finished third and Gaylon Stewart was fourth.

Quickly weaving his way to the front of the field of the NASCAR Les Schwab Tires Bomber main, Steve Ptacek was only slightly challenged. Defending champion of the division Naima Lang caught Ptacek but was unable to make a pass. New division fast time record holder Duane Schosboek started fourteenth and caught the leaders late in the 30-lap main. Schosboek made a pass on Lang with a few laps remaining and was unable to gain ground on Ptacek.

The NASCAR Mini-Stock main winner Nat Barber moved from a tenth place starting position to the front in just four laps. Barber went unchallenged for the remainder of the 30-lap event. Jamie Richardson finished second ahead of Tony Bunkleman.

In the second race of the season for the Northwest Legend Series a new winner emerged. Matt Barrett held off last week’s winner Ricky McNeil and then Duane Swanson to win the 40-lap main. Barrett in his first year as a pro division driver had the fastest setup and is the point leader. Swanson was second and Jeff Muller was third.

Obliterated was the word after the first ever Trailer Race on the Figure Eight. Every trailer was completely torn apart with pieces strewn all over the track. A vote by the fans at the conclusion of the event Steve Peters was declared the fist ever Trailer Race winner.
