Late Model race teams from throughout the Northwest are invited to participate in this special inaugural event, dubbed the ‘Can-Am 150’, with hopes of establishing this semi-open competition format race as an annual event. The management of Sun Valley Motor Speedway in Vernon BC has been busy putting the finishing touches on major off-season upgrades at this pristine ½ mile asphalt tri-oval, one of the finest stock car racing venues Canada has to offer. The promoters are anticipating a large draw of teams from both sides of the border; effectively introducing a variety of drivers, crews, car owners and spectators to Canada’s fastest growing speedway….. and building the future of stock car racing in the Okanagan region.
A full field of late model super stock teams are expected to fill the twenty-eight main event grid positions available, all pursuing an event purse of over $15,000 (Can.) available in cash and bonus awards. The field will primarily be drawn from teams that run regularly in two similar touring groups: the WRL – Western Racing League, an Alberta Canada-based late model touring program; and the LMCS – Late Model Challenge Series based in Washington State. Both programs have similar rule packages and are open to Late Model teams that meet standardized rules. The rules for this event have been designed to allow a wide variety of Late Model style cars, while maintaining parity of competition, i.e.: straight rail & perimeter chassis, cast iron heads & ‘spec’ aluminum heads, ABC/standard/downforce/tour bodies, and NW Tour-legal motors have been approved.
This event will be the season opener for the WRL teams, and points will be awarded towards their 2005 championship. The LMCS has completed two point races thus far, their opener at Wenatchee Valley’s Super Oval WA, and a rain-shortened race at Stateline Speedway ID. This event is the first of three LMCS non-points, special events in addition to eight scheduled point races. The next scheduled point race for LMCS is again at Wenatchee Valley’s Super Oval on June 18th.
The Can-Am 150 is just one of several exciting races to be held on June 4th. In addition to the Late Model Super Stock event, the always-popular Big Rigs and Dwarf Cars will each be running individual programs. Very seldom will spectators get the chance to see these three crowd-pleasing divisions scheduled together into one big evening of racing! Spectator gates open at 5pm, qualifying at 6pm, racing at 7pm. There will be a Friday night practice session from 4pm till dark, and back gate will open approximately 11am Saturday for race teams.
