Every year, Meridian Speedway near Boise, Idaho, hosts the Premiere Supermodified Racing Event in the Northwest. This two-day event features the exotic winged roadsters of the Supermodified Racing League. The Supers will run a complete show on both Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4. The competitor with the best points finish over both days will be declared the winner. This event traditionally draws twenty or more Supermodified Teams to the Treasure Valley area.
The SRL is led this year by multi-time and defending champion Troy Regier of Dinuba, California. Regier has won both of the early season events and leads the SRL Points race with 140 total points. A.J. Russell of Clovis, California, trails Regier by 15 points. Jeff Russell of Boise, Idaho is third with 113 points, followed by West Valley City, Utah’s Mike Baisch with 112 points. Jim Birges of Fresno, California and Mike McCann of Creswell, Oregon, are tied for fifth in points with 107. All of the top five teams are expected to participate in the Diamond Cup.
Other Drivers expected to compete on the Meridian quarter mile oval include Bobby Dalton of San Martin, California, Rick Cameron of Scott’s Valley, California, Jim Tartaglia, of Reedley, California, and former Diamond Cup Champion Bob Bigiogni of Salinas, California. Idaho veterans and former Diamond Cup winners Ken Hamilton and Rick Veenstra are also expected to enter. Several other competitors from Washington, Utah, Texas, and Colorado may also attend. Usually, there are several hometown Sprint Car teams that add wings and a bit of weight to conform to SRL rules to join in the fun. In recent years, these have included Cody Veenstra, Mike Murgoitio, Steve Freeman, Jimmy Hamilton, and others.![]()
