STOCKTON, California -- Stockton's Pete Anderson Jr. started the first leg of the 100-lap HAVOLINE Tri-Holiday Classic Western Late Model race in the fourth position. By lap-3 he had worked his way into the lead after methodically passing Allison Duncan, Wes Miller and Guy Guibor, then things started to get interesting.
By lap-5, Turlock's Chris Monez, from the fifth position, slid past San Rafael's Duncan into fourth and Turlock's Miller crept upon, and passed Manteca's Guibor to get into second.
By lap-7, Stockton's Gary Shafer Jr., who started at the seventh position, had worked his way up to fifth, ahead of Guibor and just behind Duncan. The race held firm for the next nine laps with Anderson Jr. in the lead, Miller at second, Monez at third, Duncan at fourth and Shafer Jr. at fifth, then the first caution flag flew due to a car leaking oil on the track.
On the restart, Shafer Jr. made a play for first by attempting to slither in between two other drivers on the front straight, he held it momentarily, until a multi-car, chain reaction collision landed him against the turn-1 wall, which brought out the race's first caution flag.
However, before the red flag flew Duncan had worked her way into second.
At the restart Duncan and Anderson Jr. drove side-by-side, then in lap-23 Duncan pulled out in front and held the lead through lap-50, then another caution and red flag lined the pair up side by side, again. When the green waved it appeared as if Anderson Jr. shifted into a gear that he hadn't yet used, and then passed Duncan on the back straight. He held the lead for the final 50-laps -- through three more cautions and a red flag -- to take the win. Duncan checked in for her third second of the season.
"I was saving earlier," said Anderson Jr., referring to his mid race play for first. "Then I gave it all I had at the restart."
The win was Anderson Jr.'s second 100-lap victory of the season. He took the opening HAVOLINE Western Late Model 100. His experience on the track was likely a key factor in Saturday's win, as he noted: "It don't come down to where you start (in the 100's) like it does in the 30's. There's a lot more yellows in the 100's, you need to get through them (to win)." Anderson Jr. also credited his win to a good car and race-savvy crew chief.
There were a few other notable performances in Saturday's Tri-Holiday Classic. Pacific Grove's Dave Byrd (2004 WLM Champ) worked his way up from the 11th starting position to capture third. Turlock's Monez, after dropping to seventh at one point, made a series of commanding passes that earned him fourth. Roseville's Shannon Mansch shook up the field by capturing fifth after starting 12th. Granite Bay's John Moore, after having the right- side mid-panel ripped from his car in a collision, came back from 2-laps down to finish 10th. Lodi's Mike Garcia finished sixth after starting 19th.
In CL BRYANT American Limited Stock Car racing, Stockton's Donny Darter, after having his previously set record beat by Modesto's Charlie Clawson, went on to capture his first checkered flag.
Darter started third, behind Stockton's Joe Allen, next to Manteca's Jacob Cardoza. At the start of the race, Stockton's Joe Allen jumped into a quick lead. Darter moved up along side of Cardoza and Stockton's Kannai Scantlen and Chad Holman moved up behind the pair in a door-to-door struggle, but the pack didn't even make it into turn-1 before the first caution flew. Scantlen landed in the wall when he broke an axle and lost a wheel. When the race restarted, Darter pulled ahead of Allen and Clawson, before a lap was ran, passed two cars and secured second. Clawson and Darter the battled it out for the rest of the 30-lap main, but Darter just couldn't be beat.
"Charlie was right there from the beginning," said an elated Darter. "By lap-19, I thought if nothing happens from here it will be our race."
Following the race, in the pit area, Clawson congratulated Darter and remarked that toward the end of the race he told himself, "It's Donny's night, go for it!"
Following Clawson's second was Cardoza at third. Allen took fourth and Stockton's Allen Ryder rounded out the top five.
Those always exciting Pro-4 Trucks super minis were back on the track for 25-laps of main event racing. Campbell's Chris Drysdale captured the main event. French Camp's Mark Henslee took second, Lodi's Mike Curry finished third, Milpitas' Ron Robeck checkered fourth and Ripon's Tim Fernandes Sr. rounded out the top five.
The CALIFORNIA WELDING SUPPLY SRL Wildwest Shootout ran its second 100-lap event of the season and Wilton's Jason Fensler again took the checkered flag. The 100- lap win was Fensler's third SRL victory this season, and his fifth consecutive 100-lap race victory at Stockton 99 Speedway, NASCAR's fastest, paved quarter-mile oval west of the Mississippi.
