LAKEPORT, California -- In the final night of the 3-day Robinson Rancheria Casino and Bingo INEX Legends Cars Spring Nationals at the Lakeport Speedway, Martin McKeefery of Milpitas led all but nine laps of the 40 lap feature and collected the $400 win and three-foot tall trophy courtesy of Robinson Rancheria Casino and Bingo general manager Scott Sirois.
The field lined up for the feature with a 10-car invert from Saturday's main event finish putting David Sciarroni and Donny Stone in the front row. Stone forged ahead at the start with Sciarroni settling into second and Rick Andrews driving the high side in third. Jake Jackson was next in line with David Fisher fifth and McKeefery sixth. Lap four saw McKeefery make his move, passing both Fisher and Jackson at the same time, and picking off Andrews the following round. At the same time David Winchel was gaining ground and by lap seven it was Stone, McKeefery, Winchel and Andrews.
Both McKeefery and Winchel passed Stone when Stone's car pushed high on lap 10. As Stone got caught on the outside, Jackson and Ryan Partridge shot by. The yellow flew on 15 when Frankie Marks spun and stalled in turn two. Four laps later the event was slowed again for a Jack Wulff Humphrey spin. Partridge swapped places with Jackson on the restart and began his pursuit of Winchel.
Sciarroni's car slowed and stopped too close to the track resulting in caution number three on lap 22. Two laps later Fisher spun for the fourth caution. The next six laps saw Partridge beat on the back of Winchel's car until INEX officials called to have the race stopped to send Partridge to the back for rough driving. While the cars were under yellow Partridge and Winchel's cars came together with Winchel pulling into the pits calling it a night.
This put Jackson in second, Thomas Leiby in third and Andrews in fourth. Then with only three laps to go Frankie Marks spun and hit the turn one concrete. The dash for the final laps saw McKeefery stay out in front to take the win followed by Jackson, Leiby, Andrews and Stone. Rounding out the top ten were Kelly Martin, Partridge (DQ for round driving), Fred Clements, Terry Miller and Fisher.
Saturday night's 30- lap feature supported a 10 car invert from time trials with Thomas Leiby of Copperopolis and Andrews in the pole positions. Leiby led the first two laps with Partridge in second and Andrews third. F. Winchel dropped out after only one lap and Kavert pulled into the pits on two. Partridge gunned past Leiby for the lead on lap three.
The only caution of the race came with only five laps down when Miller and Kelly Martin spun in turn four. Martin darted to the pits and missed the next green, missing several laps before he made it back out.
Partridge continued his domination the entire race with Leiby running second, David Winchel third and McKeefery fourth. The leaders darted gracefully through lapped traffic, and on lap 12 Winchel drove around Leiby for second. Partridge drove the distance for the win followed by D. Winchel, McKeefery, Leiby, Jake Jackson and Clement. Rounding out the top ten were Andrews, David Fisher, Stone and David Sciarroni.
In Friday night's 20 lap feature 15 year old Zachery Kavert from Redding came from 12 th starting and took the lead away from Rick Andrews on the 11 th round to win the opening event of Robinson Rancheria Casino and Bingo INEX Legends Cars Spring Nationals.
The competitors drew for position in Friday's feature with rookie driver Willy Davis of Elk Grove and Donny Stone of Lodi sharing the front row. Stone led the first round but handed it over to Fred Clement on two. As Davis lost ground Terry Miller and Martin McKeefery settled into third and fourth.
Kavert passed Rick Andrews to join the top five and picked off Miller on seven just as Stone lost poser and stalled on the back stretch to bring out the yellow. The restart saw Kavert swap places with second-place runner McKeefery , and on lap 11 Kavert took the lead and never looked back.
The final incident happened when Frankie Winchel spun on lap 16 and was t-boned by Frankie Marks. Both cars had to retire to the pits for major repairs. The final rounds saw Ryan Partridge work his way to the front, and at the checkered flag it was Kavert, McKeefery, Clement, Partridge and Andrews.
Trophy dash winners during the weekend were Leiby in the semi pros division, Donny Stone in the masters class, and Ryan Partridge in the pros division. Kavert set fast time over th e 18 car field with a 13.841 lap. In the bandolero division nine year old 2004 bandolero "bandit" rookie of the year Andre' Prescott of Palm Desert came across the line first in both the heat race and the 15 lap main event both Saturday and Sunday.
