TENINO, Washington -- The Late Model Super Stocks and the North Star Yachts and Commercial Drivers Services Sportsman each had very interesting main event races on Saturday night May 28th at South Sound Speedway. Joining in the mayhem was the Delta Camshaft Mini Stocks and the Vintage Modifieds.
Defending Late Model Super Stock Champion Nick Behn qualified fast for the 24-car class. Jimmy Clair won the B dash while Jim Wilcox won the A dash.
Bob Emerson led the first eight laps of the B main event before 16-year old rookie Donnie Steele took over to win. Steele moved up to the A main event along with Pat Schwartzkopf. Bob Emerson broke after the B main and couldn’t move up and Jimmy Clair was awarded the trophy after finishing fourth. Steve Zibulsky was fifth. Paul Blake, who broke before qualifying, didn’t make it into the A main. Dan Obrist and Brad Tanner started on the front row of the A main event. Obrist took the lead early. Lap five brought the first caution of the race out when Dustin Wilkinson was spun by Jeff Ford. Ford took the one lap penalty and both stayed out. Tom Sweatman moved up to the back of Obrist on lap 12 and on lap 18 both of them spun.
Sweatman left the track with a flat tire.
Joe Constance took over the lead now with Jim Wilcox and Willy Thom close behind. Nick Behn was running in fourth until lap 37 when he broke an oil line and was done for the night. After the caution Jim Wilcox left the track with a flat tire. Willy Thom was now running second with Brad Tanner in third and Joe Constance still leading. Tanner got passed Thom on lap 66.
Lap 71 brought out the fourth caution when Troy Conrad spun. After the race was restarted Joe Constance had a mechanical problem with his car and had to exit the track. Brad Tanner now had the lead with Willy Thom in second and Bob Presley in third. The final caution of the race came when Dan Obrist spun Willy Thom. Obrist took the penalty and it knocked Thom to the back of the pack from his excellent second place run.
