This Saturday night at Shasta Raceway Park, home of the fast 3/8 mile paved oval at the fairgrounds in Anderson, the SRL Wild West Late Model Shootout series will highlight an action packed night of racing with a 100 lap main event sponsored by Redding’s Rock 106x, in conjunction with the Muscle, Mud, and Yesterday Specialty Car and Truck Show that will feature a burnout competition at intermission. The SRL Late Models, making their only 2005 appearance at Shasta Raceway Park, will be joined by the NASCAR Coors Light Late Models, the Auto City Modifieds, and the Schmitt Equipment Sales Bombers.
Shasta Raceway Park is the fifth stop on the SRL’s 2005 Wild West Late Model Shootout schedule. Of the four races that have been completed so far, three have been won by Wilton, California’s Jason Fensler, and the fourth by last year’s Win River 150 champion, and the winner of the North State Challenge Series race on April 16th, Eric Schmidt of Roseville, his first career win in SRL competition. The three victories so far have paid off for Fensler, who currently holds a 27 point lead over Schmidt (184-157). Fremont, California’s Troy Ermish and Ceres, California’s Ken Boyd are tied for third in points with 156, while Modesto’s Steve Belletto holds fifth with 152 points in a very close championship race behind the so far impressive Fensler. Leading 2005 Victory Circle Chassis and Parts Rookie of the Year candidate Rusty Buholz of Palo Alto currently holds a 10 point lead over Jeremy Wood of Tracy, California in that race, and places 10th in the overall standings with 128 points. Ukiah’s Eric Graham, the winner of the last North State Challenge Series race held at Shasta Raceway Park, will be running as well.
The NASCAR Coors Light Late Models, led by points leader Alan Pyszora, will continue their season as well. Pyszora currently holds a 24-point lead (at 342 points) over Neil Gordon and Jerry Nichols, who are currently tied for second in points with 318 apiece. John Pederson and Gary Pyszora round out the top five in points with 313 and 305 points respectively. Leading Rookie of the Year contender Rich Oller currently holds down the sixth position with 261 points on the record. These drivers compete for local, regional, and national point championships at tracks across the United States and Canada, with regional champions winning up to $27,000 and the National Champion receiving an extra $50,000.
Shasta Raceway Park Auto City Modified track record holder Guy Young currently holds the points lead in that division with 237 points, as he maintains an 18 point lead over Ed Schanuth (219 points) and a 20 point lead over Kelly Peacock (217 points), who won three features last year as well as the most recent feature at Shasta Raceway Park. Rounding out the top five in this division are Stan Gunderson with 183 points and Jack Epperson with 169 points. Rookie of the Year candidates Jeremy Ammon of Weaverville and Roy Berlinghoff of Redding are nose-to-tail holding sixth and seventh in points, earning 162 and 142 points respectively thus far.
The Schmitt Equipment Sales Bombers will be in action as well, with the winner of the last event, David Braund, leading the championship chase at 322 points.
