Roseville’s Scott Woessner bested Rick Andersen of Citrus Heights in a heated battle to win his second Modified main event of 2005, Saturday, at the All American Speedway in Roseville, Ca. Woessner’s win came during the ninth night of points racing for the Thunder Valley Casino Championship Cup Series and the seventh race for the Modified division. Three main events were decided in the final two laps.
“Overall, the competition is the best its been in years,” Woessner said. “The track has two legitimate grooves, I was able to pass people on both the inside and the outside.” Rich Lindgren of Rio Linda led the opening two laps before Andersen took the lead. Andersen held the lead position over a tight pack of Woessner, Gary Glenn of Orangevale, and Dan Jinkerson of Diamond Springs. The top-four cars swapped position repeatedly throughout the 35 lap distance. The leaders had a scare on lap 15, as Mikey Lehman, Troy Nagosek, and Ken Poppen tangled in the middle of the front-straightaway. The entire field dodged the incident, including several cars that went full-blast through the infield. Jinkerson and Glenn challenged Andersen from the inside until lap 33, when they collided off turn two, bringing out the yellow. Woessner beat Andersen to the line, something he admitted was crucial. “After getting banged around a bit I knew I needed the outside line,” Woessner said. “I had to drag race (Andersen) to the line or I was screwed.”
Woessner took the option to start outside Andersen and held him off in a two lap sprint to the finish. John Cummings of Rescue won his second Street Stock main event, in his rookie season in the division after moving up from Bombers. Cummings spent 15 laps working through a big lead pack to get up to second place from his seventh starting position, then reeled in Ricky Williams of Roseville by lap 24. On lap 33, Cummings took the lead from Williams on the outside off turn four and held the lead to the finish. “I was a little tentative to take the outside because (Williams) was loose and running a wide line,” Cummings said. “I didn’t expect to be doing this good this early in the season.” “Joe Bugge built me a good car and we’re learning a lot.”
Rick Anable of Rocklin won the Bomber main event, also only leading the final two laps of the 35 lap race.
Cody Rickard of Roseville led the first five laps before Mickey Owens of Elverta took the lead. Two laps later, Rickard and Jim McGinnis Jr. of Antelope collided and went the entire front-stretch wall together.
Owens held the lead on the outside of Jim McCully of Roseville through several restarts until lap 28, when Owens got caught up in lapped traffic.
Anable went inside of McCully on lap 31 and took the lead on the back-straight on lap 33 for the win.
Jason Romero of Cameron Park passed Jim Badeker of Citrus Heights on lap 22 to take the Mini Stock main event.
Romero started ninth and followed Badeker around Chris Marks of Auburn on lap 19, then passed Badeker in traffic off turn four.
David Winchel of Sebastopol passed Fred Clement on lap 11, and held off hard charges by Martin McKeefrey of Milpitas to win the Legends of the Pacific race.
