The Late Model Super Stocks were back on the 3/8ths mile oval in Rochester on Saturday night. Rookie Dustin Wilkinson got his first fast time with a 14.272. All 24 cars that qualified were within 8/10ths of a second, making the racing very close all night long. Ken Kaltschmidt led all four laps of the A trophy dash to win over Tom Sweatman, Wilkinson and Billy Weber. Jerry Fink also led all four laps of the B dash for the win. Mike Obrist was second, Jimmy Clair was third and Bob Coffey was fourth. Rod Schultz Sr. and Tim Gosch started on the front row of the B main event. Schultz took the lead with Gosch in second and Mike Obrist in third. Jerry Fink took his car off the track on lap six and a caution was thrown on lap eight when Mike Obrist’s car slowed and he left the track. Bob Coffey moved into third and Jimmy Clair was running fourth. Clair then spun on lap 10, bringing out the final caution. Rod Shultz Sr. won and moved up into the A main event along with Tim Gosch who finished second. Bob Coffey was awarded the trophy.
Willy Thom and Billy Weber started on the front row of the A main event for the Late Model Super Stocks. Thom jumped out to the lead with Ken Kaltschmidt in second and Nick Behn in third. The first caution came out on lap three when Rod Schultz Jr. got into Billy Weber. Both were sent to the back and Schultz was assessed a one lap penalty. Tom Sweatman got into third place on lap 12. The next caution came out on lap 19 when Al Carver got into Tim Gosch. Carver was assessed a one lap penalty and both went to the back. Willy Thom was still out front when Tom Sweatman moved into second on lap 26. Lapped traffic came into play on lap 36 and Willy Thom lost the lead to Sweatman and Kaltschmidt moved into second.
Lap 54 brought out the next caution when Rod Schultz Jr. and Matt Barrett got together and spun. Another caution came out on lap 59 when Billy Weber, Ray Wallace and James Van Cleve all caused a pile up on the front stretch. Weber and Van Cleve were unable to continue racing. Wallace stayed out until lap 62 and then left because he was leaking fluid. Another caution came out immediately after the green flew when Brad Tanner got a flat tire and then spun and hit the wall in turns one and two. The green flew again with Tom Sweatman still out front, Ken Kaltschmidt in second and Nick Behn in third. Joe Constance got around Behn on lap 83. The race ran green to the end when Tom Sweatman got his third win of the season. Ken Kaltschmidt was second and Joe Constance was third. Nick Behn ended up finishing fourth and Dustin Wilkinson did a great job finishing fifth. Dan Obrist, Brian Balmelli, Bob Presley, Josh Peters and Willy Thom were the rest of the top ten.
Bobby Moore had a great night in the Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks. Moore qualified fast for the class with a 16.818. Mike Carlson won the trophy dash. Mitchell Woods won the B heat race with Bryan Christoffer in second and Mark Gernlein in third. Scott Johnson won the A heat race with Jared Vorse in second and Carlson in third. A. Jay Smith and Mitchell Woods started on the front row of the main event. Smith took the lead with Christoffer in second. Christoffer took the lead on lap eight. Smith was second and Steve Woods was third. Lap 10 brought out the first caution when Christoffer spun all by himself while leading. Smith was now back in the lead with Steve Woods in second. Woods made a move on the outside of Smith on lap 12. Smith gave Woods no room and pushed him right up into the wall and then into the yuke tires near the exit of the track. Woods hit the tires and launched into the air and flipped over 1 ½ times, landing on his top. Woods was fine but neither he nor Smith were able to finish the race. Booby Moore now had the lead and won the race with Steve Gerdts in second and Dan Walker in third. Scott Johnson finished in fourth and Mike Carlson was fifth. Mitchell Woods came away with sixth, Ian Alder was seventh, Jared Vorse was eighth, Mark Gernlein was ninth and Christoffer ended up tenth.
JJ Hamilton was the fastest of 22 qualifiers for the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks. Ron Ehli powered to the front in the trophy dash for the win. Mike Brooks won the C heat race over Sean Riley and Kevin Boretsky. Seventeen-year-old Rookie Cody Erskine led all eight lap of the B heat race to win. Paul Hopkins was second and Mike Press was third. Jay Hopkins won the A heat race with Dan Woodward in second and Ehli in third. After Bobby Moore won the main event in the Pure Stocks he started on the pole position for the Street Stocks. Moore led the first two laps of the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks main event. Paul Hopkins then took the lead and Cody Erskine moved into second. The first caution was thrown on lap eight when Mike Saylors spun. Josh Marcy and JJ Hamilton both left the track on that lap. Charles Meadors left the track a lap later because of fluid leaking. After running fantastically Cody Erskine spun on lap 15, bringing out the caution. Mike Press, Ron Ehli and Jay Hopkins all got damage on that lap and left the track. Ehli came back out without losing a lap. Another caution came on lap 18 when Bobby Moore lost a tire on his car. Bobby Micielli was now out front with Dan Woodward in second and Paul Hopkins in third. The final caution was thrown Jordan McGregor slowed and he and Mike Saylors got together. Bobby Micielli led the rest of the race until the last corner when Jim Swanson got around him and beat him to the line by a nose. This was Swanson’s second win in as many races. Micielli was second and Dan Woodward was third. Paul Hopkins finished fourth and Mike Press was fifth. Bill Manney, Bill Posh Jr., Sean Riley, Jordan McGregor and Mike Saylors rounded out the top ten.
Tom Keehan qualified fast again for the Delta Camshaft Mini Stocks. Kyle Hartman won the trophy dash. Wayne Dillon led all eight laps of the B heat race to win over Bill Hansel and Nancy Martin. Tony Bartlotti did the same in the A heat race with Jeff Bracale in second and Richard Smith in third. Wayne Dillon took the lead from lap one in the main event. Bill Hansel briefly got his nose out front on laps five and six but Dillon got back out front and Kyle Hartman moved into second. Tony Bartlotti was third. The caution came out on lap 16 when Floyd Hayne spun. On the next lap Bartlotti got into Hartman and both lost their positions. Jeff Bracale was now second and Bill Hansel was third. Bracale got his nose out front on lap 24 and took the win at the end of lap 25. Wayne Dillon was second and Bill Hansel was third. Freeman Pruitt was fourth, Norman Steelhammer was fifth and Nancy Martin was sixth.
South Sound Speedway has a very full schedule for next weekend. Saturday July 2nd will feature the North Star Yachts and Commercial Drivers Services Sportsman, Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks, 360 Wingless Sprints and the Mini Cup Open Division and Future Stars. Sunday night will have the Washington Association of Demolition Drivers (WADD), the Hinkle homes Pure Stocks, Delta Camshaft Mini Stocks and the Yelm National Auto Parts Bumblebees.
