The NASCAR DODGE Weekly Series competition is really heating up at Stockton 99 Speedway! Granite Bay's John Moore is leading the HAVOLINE Western Late Model division points standing with 626, but he's only 4 points ahead of Stockton's Pete Anderson Jr. Trailing both of these competitors is two-time main event winner Allison Duncan (596), Stockton 99 Speedways NASCAR Drive for Diversity program competitor out of San Rafael.
Fans and officials can't recall the last time -- if ever -- there was a WLM points race this close midway through a season, where two trailing drivers were still within striking distance of a shot at the lead.
Anderson Jr. knows the track as well as anyone, his proven car has allowed him to take two 100-lap main events and a 30-lap race. Last season he came in second place in the division, one place ahead of current leader Moore. Anyone who knows Stockton 99 Speedway racing knows that Anderson Jr. is far from out of a shot at taking the title.
Duncan, aside from a couple of nights where she was plagued by car trouble, has consistently finished in the top 5. Her two main event wins have shown the crowd that she has what it takes to win and with Bill McAnally racing behind her, she is sure to be coming out ready as ever throughout the second half of the season. Shes another driver who cant be counted out!
Whatever strategies both of the division's trailing drivers decide to implement from here on out, one thing is for sure, they'll have to plan with more than just a focus on how to get out in front of Moore. Also on the track each week are a number of other drivers who have shown that they have the skill and equipment necessary to post qualifying time, win a dash and take one of the top three to five finishing slots.
Among some of the drivers who could turn the tide on any given week are: Chowchilla's Eric Humphries, this 2004 Rookie of the Year is sixth in points standings and is a consistent top five main event finisher; Stockton's Gary Shafer Jr., currently at fifth on the points board, is also a consistent top five finisher and among the most talented drivers on the track; Turlock's Chris Monez, piloting the Stockton Dodge, Dodge late model Intrepid, has secured several fast times this season and seems to be closing in on a main win. There's also visiting drivers who show up from time-to-time, like Monterey's Dave Byrd. Byrd is the 2004 champ and when he's around there's always the possibility that he's going to take the win.
Track announcers refer to Charlie Clawson as a "good ole' boy" out of Modesto. He's leading the CL BRYANT American Limited Stock Car division's points race by 80, but fans know that what's "good" about his driving is that he doesn't allow his comfortable lead to get in the way of seeking the main event win each week!
In last week's 30-lap main a total invert placed Clawson near the back of the pack at the start. Even if he had just finished the race where he started, he still would have emerged with a significant points cushion. But what did he do? He treated the crowd of over 3,400 to an unrivaled ALSC show. He stalked his opponents one at a time, overtaking one car after another until he emerged with a second place finish that wasn't grabbed until the final lap!
Taking his first ALSC win of the season last week was Stockton'sMike Brooks Jr. His win showed the crowd that in this wild, woolly race division you can't sit at home and assume you know who is going to win, the only way to be sure of who goes to victory lane is to get to the track and find out for yourself!
The Pro-4 Trucks may be distinctively smaller than other NASCAR rides, but they're no less exciting to watch! Last week Lodi'sMi ke Curry took the main event, but only after the front position changed a couple of times. Current points leader Mark Henslee of Lathrop, Milpitas' Ron Robeck, Oakdale's Nathan McNeil and Ripons Tim Fernandes Sr. are all expected back for another exciting main event!
Adding to the excitement at Stockton 99 Speedway will be the visiting Legends of the Pacific. These small, classic looking speedsters are always great for some thrilling laps around NASCAR's fastest quarter-mile oval west of the Mississippi!
