Lakeport, CA.... Mike Doss of Lakeport seems to be the dominant factor in the Airport Auto Brokers Late Model series as he has captured three of the five 2000 events, and Saturday night he made it two in a row at Lakeport Speedway. Doss’ other victory in this series came on April 30 at the Ukiah Speeday and June 3 at Lakeport.
In other special events action, another dominant driver, 16 year old Julie Sylva of Kelseyville, set fast time and won her second feature race at Lakeport in the NCI-4 modified division.
The late models timed in 17 cars with Jeremy Hopkins setting the fast time of 12.801 seconds. Heat wins went to Andy Layton and Junior Roddy. The feature began with Layton blasting out in front of Janice Buschiazzo with Matt Timmons and John Callas following his lead. 1999 Lakeport Speedway late model champ Kevin Estep moved into fourth with Don Austin fifth by the sixth lap.
Estep got around Timmons for second on lap 8 and Doss came from 16th starting and was running third by the ninth lap. When Layton caught the back of the pack, he was trapped in the low groove, and Doss zipped by both Estep and Layton for the lead. Layton faded as both Austin and Mike Rose gained position. The mid point in the race saw Doss way out in front with Estep second, Rose third, Jim Stillman fourth and Junior Roddy fifth.
The raced was slowed on lap 17 when track officials deemed that Estep was blocking, and flagman Johnny Miskill set Estep back in the lineup behind Doss and Rose. The single-file restart saw Doss and Rose nose-to-tail with Estep losing ground. Doss accepted the win followed by Rose, Stillman, Roddy and Al Vogel. The Airport Auto Brokers Late models return to Lakeport Speeday this Saturday night for the 12th annual Keleyville Lumber Deake Lyndall Memorial
The four-cylinder modifieds started only nine cars when a crash in the preliminary heat race eliminated Gina Buschiazzo and Bob Hasland. John Barker lead the way, but it only took Sylva six laps to pass the entire field and take the lead. The first yellow occurred on lap nine when Mark Tante spun in turn two. Sylva pulled ahead of Barker again on the restart with Janice Buschiazzo in third and Robert Snow fourth.
Snow and Tante tangled and spun on lap 23 to slow the action the final time, allowing Virgil Cokeley to gain position. Tante worked his way back to the front, and at the checkered flag it was Sylva, Cokeley, Tante, Barker and Tiger Fernandez. Heat wins went to Barker and Janice Buschiazzo.
