Mike Mansch of Roseville dominated the Westcar Late Model 100, Saturday at All American Speedway in Roseville, Ca, leading the entire distance from the pole position after an attrition filled event.
Mansch’s only slip over the race distance occurred on lap 75 when he slid through the infield in turn three, after hitting fluid possibly laid down by Dan Knight of Ukiah.
“The car was good all day,” Mansch said. “The first 25-30 laps I was not driving as hard. I knew that when (Rich Lawlor) and (Billy Butler) got up there I’d have to drive hard.”
Butler ran in the second position for more than 60 laps, but could not hold pace with Mansch.
Both Steven Gannon of Redding and Gary Glenn of Orangevale were pre-race scratches due to motor problems.
On the second lap of racing, Chet Danburg of Carson City slowed dramatically off turn two, sparking a chain reaction accident. Scott Chappell of Lodi, Shannon Mansch of Roseville, and Mike Garcia of Lodi tangled to avoid Danburg, with Garcia’s car going on top of Mansch’s into the infield.
Chappell lost 28 laps for repairs and Garcia was eliminated from competition.
Fast-qualifier Josh Bews of Roseville slammed the wall in turn one on lap 12 to end his evening.
Butler, Byron Gonzales of Carmichael, and Chuck Glick of Citrus Heights ran fourth, fifth, and sixth by lap 21, while Steve Daniels of Orangevale continued to fall back through the field after starting fifth.
Glick retired from the race on lap 30 with a broken rear-end.
Christina Davis of Santa Rosa ran second with Butler on her tail until lap 35, when Davis spun on her own exiting turn four.
Rich Lawlor ended his chances of victory when he tagged the wall on lap 37; he lost 16 laps making repairs.
Gonzales and Butler began a furious battle for the second position that continued until lap 93. Gonzales and Butler repeatedly made contact trying to fight for the position.
Lawlor became a significant back-marker when he returned to the race track, playing a major role in the battle for the second position that developed into a four car battle including Harold Long and Travis Combs.
Butler struggled to lap Lawlor around the outside, which pinned Gonzales behind Lawlor for more than 15 laps.
Butler’s car eventually faded due to tire wear and Gonzales overtook him for the second position on lap 92.
“I gave him a couple good shoves but he didn’t want to move over,” Gonzales said. “When we got here today the car was undriveable so I’m satisfied with the finish.”
The 17 year-old Butler ended up finishing sixth.
“If a car isn’t up past my gas tank I’m not going to give them the line,” Butler said. “(Pointing to the
rear-end) It’s not like they didn’t hit me or anything.”
Mansch cruised unopposed to the finish to become the sixth different winner in this year’s Westcar season.
“I felt when we got here that I had a top-five car,”
Mansch said. “I’ve had two other top-five cars this season that broke. Last time we were here ran up in third and the ignition broke.”
Lawlor won the Scott Performance Wires Dash, and Garcia won the b-main event.
