The North Star Yachts and Commercial Drivers Services Sportsman main event looked more like the Demolition Derby that was scheduled for Sunday afternoon. During the first six laps the race went from 17 cars that started down to 9 cars. Matt Barrett and Devin Eierman started on the front row of the event. Barrett took the immediate lead with Eierman in second, Shane Sawin in third, Brandon Finch in fourth and Bradley Shaw in fifth. Dennis Shaffer left the track on lap two with a carburetor problem. This was Shaffer’s first race in the Sportsman class. A caution was thrown on lap four for debris on the track. Craig Pfander left the track on this lap. Matt Barrett was still running out front with Eierman, Finch, Sawin and Shaw in tow. On lap six John Boyatt attempted to make a pass on Shaw and spun him in turn one. What happened next was just a pile up of fiberglass. Tina McMillan spun to avoid the accident, Brandon Taylor did also and then Pat Clark had no where to go but up. Clark launched over Taylor’s car and landed back on the other side of him. The race went to a red flag. All drivers were fine. Shaw, Clark, McMillan, and Taylor were all done for the night. Jeremy Richardson also left the track during the caution with a broken brake caliper. After the race went to yellow flag conditions Charlie West Jr. was trying to get going when his engine compartment caught fire. It was put out immediately and he was fine but the car was done for the night.

The race went back to green with nine cars running. All were on the lead lap except for John Boyatt who got a black flag for the incident with Bradley Shaw. Matt Barrett was still out front with Devin Eierman in second and Brandon Finch in third. John Pokorny left the track on lap 12. Brandon Finch made a move on Eierman on lap 19 to get the second spot. Shane Sawin came around too and Eierman was back in fourth. On lap 22 Barrett was attempting to lap Scott Brown and the two got together. Barrett lost his tire and was done for the night after a fantastic run. Brandon Finch had the lead now and was looking for his first win of the season. Shane Sawin was second, Devin Eierman was third and Paul ‘Pappy’ Welch was fourth with Robert Hays in fifth. Sawin got around Finch for the lead on lap 25 and a caution was thrown a lap later. Welch apparently lost power in his car and headed for the infield when Hays got caught up with him. Both were done for the night. When the race got restarted Brandon Finch left the track with a flat tire. This left three cars on the track and the race was shortened to 30 laps instead of the scheduled 50 laps. Shane Sawin led Devin Eierman and John Boyatt to the end of the race for his third main event win of the season. Sawin also won the trophy dash earlier in the night. Devin Eierman finished second with John Boyatt in third. Brandon Finch finished fourth and set fast time for the night. Paul ‘Pappy’ Welch was fifth. Bob Hays finished up sixth with Matt Barrett seventh, Scott Brown eighth, John Pokorny ninth and Charlie West Jr. tenth.

JR Ray set a new track record in the 360 Wingless Sprints on Saturday night with a 13.408. Brian Geiszler won the trophy dash. Jason Thomas led all eight laps of the B heat race to win with Kyle Secord in second and Kirk Eklund in third. Doug Kammerzell led the first three laps of the A heat race before JR Ray took over to win. Kammerzell was second and Rich Leighty was third. Before the green flew for the main event Casey Walker and Kyle Secord got together. Walker was up in the wall in turn two and was unable to continue. Secord continued but Brian Geiszler left the track on that lap and was done for the night. Kirk Eklund took the lead on the first lap and held on until lap four when JR Ray took over. Ray dominated the race leaving only two other cars on the lead lap. Ray won his fourth out of five races. Mike Basher was second for his fourth time this season. Doug Kammerzell finished third. One lap down was Jeremy Sabin in fourth in his first Sprint race, Rich Leighty in fifth and Jason Thomas in sixth. Kirk Eklund was seventh and Dale Petry was eighth, both were two laps down.

Mike Carlson clocked in fast for the Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks. Dan Walker beat out Bobby Moore, Mitchell Woods and Carlson for the Dash win. Scott Johnson led all eight laps of the B heat race to win over Ian Alder and Rick Schmidt. Steve Woods led seven laps of the A heat race before losing momentum and dropping back to finish fifth. Steve Gerdts took the win with Mike Carlson in second and Mitchell Woods in third. Kenny Bastrom and Rick Schmidt started on the front row of the main event. Bastrom and Schmidt fought back and forth for the first lap before Schmidt got by for the lead. Jared Vorse moved into second spot on lap four. A caution was thrown on lap six when Steve Woods, Steve Gerdts and Ian Alder got together. Gerdts was done for the night. Schmidt still led with Vorse in second and Bobby Moore in third. Schmidt held onto the lead until lap 14 when lapped traffic came into play and Schmidt got into the front stretch wall with Mitchell Woods. No caution was thrown but Woods and Schmidt both left the track. It was a disappointing end to a good run for Schmidt who has only been on the track for one other main event this season. Mike Carlson took the lead on lap 15 from Vorse who fell back to third behind Dan Walker. Bobby Moore moved into third spot on lap 17. Carlson won his first of the season after 25 laps. Dan Walker was second and Bobby Moore was third. Jared Vorse finished fourth after changing a motor between hot laps and qualifying. Steve Woods finished in fifth, Scott Johnson in sixth, Ian Alder in seventh, Bryan Christoffer in eighth, Barry Griel in ninth and Mark Gernlein in tenth. The entire top ten were on the lead lap.

In Mini Cup Open Division action Steven Roberts qualified fast and Terryl Dykstra won the dash. Dave Vanderpol led all eight laps of the heat race for the win over Tanner McCombs and Steven Roberts. Brooke Lefor took the lead on lap two of the main event and never looked back. The caution free 25-lap main event lasted 10 minutes. Lefor took the win with Steven Roberts in second and Tanner McCombs in third. Dan Larson Sr. finished fourth, Dan Larson Jr. was fifth and Terryl Dykstra was sixth. Dave Vanderpol was eighth, Steven Daskam was ninth, Josh Stevens was tenth and Buddy Benefield was eleventh.

Aaron Stanley took the fast time spot for the sixth time this season in as many races. Jordan Daskam stayed out front to win the trophy dash. Zach Blockhan won the heat race after leading all eight laps. Kayla Roberts was second and Matt Benefield was third. Zach Blockhan took the lead on the first lap of the main event with Kayla Roberts in second. Austin ‘Hoss’ Thom took second on lap three. On lap four there was a caution when Jacob VanGesen and Dustin Torrey spun. VanGesen left the track and was done for the night. Blockhan stayed out front with Thom in second and Aaron Stanley in third. On lap 12 Aaron Stanley and Thom got together with Thom Spinning losing seven spots and Stanley losing only two spots. Kayla Roberts then moved into second with Matt Benefield in third. Zach Blockhan won his second main event in a row and second of the season. Kayla Roberts was second and Matt Benefield was third. Aaron Stanley finished fourth, Charlie Evans was fifth, Jordan Daskam was sixth, Chad Neet was seventh, Austin Thom was eighth, Brayden McCombs was ninth and Dustin Torrey was tenth.

Coming up next weekend at South Sound Speedway will be the Late Model Super Stocks for 100 laps, the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks, Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks and the Dwarf cars will be visiting. Racing begins at 6:30 with qualifying at 5:00 pm.
