TURN BACK THE CLOCK SUCCESSFUL FOR SOME AT EVERGREEN SPEEDWAYEVERGREEN SPEEDWAY

With both ends of the age spectrum represented in the NASCAR Mini-Stock Division, it was the elder Pete Jensen that rose to the occasion. Jensen who just turned 62 years of age started racing at Evergreen Speedway in 1969 and has won a main event in each of the five decades since. Using Nat Barber’s car, Jensen came from mid-pack to take the lead with five laps remaining in the 20-lap feature. Point leader Jamie Richardson could not hold the determined Jensen back and had to settle for second ahead of third place finisher Mark Weedin.
The Super Stock 50-lap main was a tale of two halves. The first half was a quiet twenty five laps. The second half was totally different with four yellow flags. The first came when point leader Shane Harding and Naima Lang got together in turn one. On the ensuing restart Harding was at the back. The next yellow came out when Harding and second in points Jason Fraser tangled up on the backstretch. Again Harding went to the back for another restart. Meanwhile Kelly Mann who had spent a good portion of the main running in second behind Doug Davidson was able to get by Davidson on a restart to take the lead and kept it to the checkered. Gaylon Stewart who finished second could not gain any ground on Mann. With a well used wounded car Harding finished third. Harding gained four points on Fraser with 14-points separating the two with five races left to finish the season.
Jill Lang won her second main in her rookie season in the Bomber Division. The win did not come easy. An early incident that had her rear bumper hanging precariously but a yellow flag gave her a chance to shake it off just before having to retire to pit road to get it removed. On the restart James Mugge and Lang got together. Jill was able to hang on to the car and stayed out front. Craig Rowalt moved to second and tried to mount a challenge but to no avail. Point leader Travis Blackwood finished third.
Spectacular and controversial was the finish of the Super Figure Eight main. With cars running into each other on the last lap when race leader Greg Scott had a tire go down. As the front four cars exited the final turn it was drag race to the finish. With Doug Wilkinson going to the right to get around spinning cars and Steve Peters going left. A review of the video tape showed Peters winning by two feet. Brandon Lindberg finished third and with the flat tire Greg Scott finished fourth.
Steve Peters, in the Ben Chandler Stinger 8, went from the sixteenth starting spot to the lead and the win. The first change in the point lead this season took place with Steve Baumgartner knocking Greg Estes off the top of the ladder. Estes finished a distant seventeenth while Baumgartner finished fourth. Bobby Shukar finished second and David Dixon third.
The Extreme Contact Figure Eight main was won by Benny Raynes. Raynes kept second place finisher Nick Niesen at bay to gain a second win this season. Steve Peters was third.
Drawing the number one starting position in the Hornet main, winner Mike Middleton, used it to his advantage. With thirty five cars taking the green it was not long before Middleton was in heavy lapped traffic. He did a masterful job to weave his way around car after car. With so much traffic to contend with second place finisher Mark Light could not get close to Middleton. Also finishing on the podium with a third place finish was Mark Light’s brother of Jeff.
