RECAPPING IRWINDALE:
Eight of the top 10 finishers at Irwindale improved on their finishing mark from June, when the series made its first visit to the 1/2-mile facility. Three of those drivers had failed to crack the top 20 in their first outing there.
Butch Gilliland’s third-place finish at Irwindale marked his 80th career top-I 0 finish in the series. He ranks fifth on the list of career top 10 finishes, with Bill Schmitt leading the list with 163.
NOTES ABOUT SALT LAKE CITY;
This inaugural visit to Rocky Mountain Raceways is the 11th of 14 races on the NWWS schedule. It is the final of six consecutive short track events on the schedule and the seventh of eight short track races overall this season.
The Bank One 250 Presented by Pacific Coast Building Products & PPG Automotive Finishes is the first race in the state of Utah for the NASCAR Winston West Series in its 46-year history.
NOTES OF INTEREST:
Nine different drivers have visited victory lane in the 10 NWWS races so far this season. That is the most in more than two decades. There were 10 different winners in 1978, a year which featured 18 stand-alone races.
Three of the past four races have featured first-time winners in the series — Steve Portenga at Irwindale, Kevin Richards at Monroe and Austin Cameron at Irwindale. There have been six firsttime winners in the series overall this season.
Eight different drivers have won a Bud Pole Award in the series this year. A series record 11 different drivers won a pole position in 1971.
Sean Woodside has the best average finish in the series so far. His average in the 10 races that have been completed is 8.1.
Woodside leads the category for most laps completed. He has made 1,693 laps, which is 96.74 of the 1,760 possible.
Woodside also has led the most laps of competition this year. He has kept the NAPA/Martin Senour Chevrolet in the lead for 337 laps.
Cameron’s victory at Irwindale propelled him from fifth to third in the NASCAR Winston West Series championship standings. The runner-up finish by Richards moved him up three spots from I 1th to eighth.
Cameron won $13,192 for his victory at Irwindale, which pushed his career winnings in the series over the $200,000 mark. With $207,734, he is l7~ on the list of NWWS career money leaders. His winning purse also moved Cameron into the lead in terms of money won so far this season — with
$67,381.
Drivers celebrating birthdays during the first half of September include Blair Alken, who turns 43 on the 2nd; Kelly Tanner, who turns 37 on the 5~1~ and Scoff Saunders. who turns 35 on the it.
STATS OF THE WEEK:
Bill Sedgwick’s sixth-place finish at Irwindale marked the first time this season the two-time series champion finished out of the top five in a short track race.
