DAYTONA BEACH, Florida Peyton Sellers moved one small step closer to his goal, of winning the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Division I championship, with his 11th Late Model victory last Saturday night at South Boston (Va.) Speedway. The win boosted Sellers' NDWS Division I point total to 1,102, 26 points ahead of second-place Tim Karrick, who races at Lakeside Speedway and Linn County Speedway in Kansas. Sellers, of Danville, Va., continues to maintain the highest point total among all drivers in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series nationally.
Nick Parker, who races at Rocky Mountain Raceways near Salt Lake City, jumped from ninth-place to sixth in the NDWS Division I point standings. Parker was the biggest mover in the standings this week, following his strong performance last weekend in the track's Modified class, which held twin 50-lap feature races. Parker, of Kearns, Utah, finished fifth in the first feature and second in the second race, helping him stay ahead of his rivals at Rocky Mountain and improve his standing in the Division I championship race.
At Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., meanwhile, Tim Brown clinched his second consecutive - and sixth overall - track championship, with his first feature win of the year in the Modified class. Brown, of Cana, Va., is now second in all-time championships won at the track. Ralph Brinkley leads that category with eight Bowman Gray track titles between 1973-1987. Brown entered the final night of racing trailing Burt Myers by 10 points, but the dramatic win capped off his championship bid.
For NDWS Division I point leaders Sellers and Karrick, their championship battle is far from over. Sellers' home track at South Boston will be closed this weekend and returns to action Sept. 3.
Karrick will be returning to the track this weekend after sitting idle last week. South Boston will be closed once again Sept. 10. NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series points close Sept. 18.
