Lexington, Michigan--It was the final events ever under the current Southern All Star Series sanctioning banner at the Birmingham (AL) International Raceway on August 19-20. The historical World Classic at the 5/8s mile fairgrounds facility closed the book on the current Southern All-Stars Series as it has been known for throughout the years in the Southern region of the United States.

The Lexington, Michigan based ASA Late Model Series acquired the Southern All Star Pro Late Model Series as well as the Southern All Stars Super Late Model Series back in early July 2005! The change over will officially take effect September 1, 2005.

In 2006, the existing ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts will expand its' horizons with a Premier Touring Series; the ASA Late Model Challenge Division. The Challenge Division will remain on a radial tire and will implement the current existing rules run currently under the set-up being used by the existing ASA Late Model Series.

Also in 2006, the ASA Late Model Series will be expanding its' portfolio with the formation of the ASA Late Model Series Northern and Southern divisions. The North and South divisions will also implement the current existing rules run now by the ASA Late Model Series, the only difference in 2006 for the southern and northern divisions; is that they will run on a bias ply or 10-inch slick tire.

The Southern Division will take over for the existing Southern All-Stars Pro Late Model tour, while the Northern Division will be another division under the ASA Late Model Series banner.

As for the final events under the Southern All-Stars banner, Josh Hamner and Charlie Bradberry will forever have their names etched in the record books as the final SAS winners! Hamner won the Pro Late Model Series 100-lap feature while Bradberry elected to go for an extra $2,000 by starting from the back of the pack and won the final SAS Super Late Model event.

In the SAS Pro Late Models World Classic 100, Josh Hamner dominated the Pro Late Model Series event after setting fast time earlier in the evening. The Chelsea, Alabama pilot then made quick work of the field by coming from his third starting spot for the win, his first of the season. Gary Helton finished second as Series Points Leader, Chris Whorton came home third. Justin South, Shannon Dodson, Zach Taylor, Chris Serio, Stephen Mitchell, Gary Sanford Jr., and 13-year-old Hunter Robbins rounded out the top 10.

Whorton secured enough points to be crowned the Southern All-Stars Pro Late Model Series Champion for the second year in a row! The three-year old series saw Fredrick Moore win the title in 2003 before Whorton came on to win the last two championships. Whorton will come into the 2006 season as the defending ASA Late Model Series Southern Division champion!

In the companion SAS Super Late Models 100-lap feature, another Chelsea, Alabama star took the win as Charlie Bradberry held off all comers to win the feature after taking the $2000 challenge to start at the back of the field! Bradberry held off Shane Seig for the victory. Augie Grill finished third ahead of Ken McFarland, Josh Hamner, who pulled double duty, Johnny Brazier, Matt Hawkins, Dennis Reno Jr., Ronnie Sanders, and Danny Bagwell rounded out the top 10.

Rookie Matt Hawkins hung on to win the final Southern All-Stars Super Late Model Series Championship over Bradberry!

The remainder of the 2005 season will be under the direction of the ASA Late Model Series. The next event for the SAS portion of the ASA Late Model Series is during the historical All-American 400 weekend on November 4-6 at the Music City (TN) Motorplex in Nashville, Tennessee. This event will be co sanctioned with the CRA Super Series out of Anderson, Indiana. The Cars and Stars from both the North and the South will meet up in Music City for a showdown between the best from both worlds! Last season, 2004 CRA Super Series champion, Chuck Barnes Jr., took the win for the Northern counterparts.

As for the current ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts, the officials and teams will now take a well deserved week off after a grueling stretch of five races in five weekends. The next two events for the ASA Late Model Series will both be over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Friday September 2nd the Hawkeye Downs (IA) Speedway in Cedar Rapids, Iowa will host the Barron Motor Supply 100. Then the teams will travel North up to the I-94 (MN) Raceway in Sauk Centre, Minnesota for the Minnesota Labor Day 100 on Monday afternoon, September 5th.
