GREAT GREG SCOTT WINS FIGURE EIGHT NATIONALSEVERGREEN SPEEDWAY
Source: Scott Ellsworth
The 22nd Figure Eight Nationals had 27-cars start the 100-lap event. Winner Greg Scott started on the outside of the front row after drawing the #2 chip. It was not long before Don Eslick who started 19th was on Scott’s bumper. Eslick made a pass in the continuous traffic to take the lead from Scott on lap 36. Pulling away Eslick was slowed at the X along with contact giving Scott the opportunity to get the lead back on lap 50. Scott was able to stay out front with nifty and crash defying moves for the final 50-laps. The race was slowed by just four yellow flags with only one in the last 50-laps. The race had four lead changes with Mike Buse leading the first 10 then Scott, Eslick and Scott the final laps. John Carlson who came within inches of going a lap down to the leaders finished third. A yellow flag gave him the advantage to move back up to the pack. Steve Peters last year’s Nationals winner finished fourth. Ryan Gunderson finished fifth a lap down. The 50-lap Super Stock main was won by Shane Harding. Harding took advantage of starting fourth after a slow qualifying attempt and a 10-car invert. On victory stage after his eighth win this season Harding said “my goal is to match my dad’s best year of 9-wins”. When asked why not 10-wins with two races remaining this season he said “I don’t know if I want to beat him (dad Pete Harding) I just want to tie. Harding may be forced to win the last two races with the point chase for the championship still very tight. Second in points Jason Fraser finished second after starting tenth. The two are just 16-points apart with one more race on the 3/8-mile and the other on the Super Big 5/8-mile. Third place went to Gaylon Stewart and John Burtsche fourth. Winner of the 30-lap Bomber main, Naima Lang started ninth and was in front by lap 15. Second place finisher Jim Foti made a couple of strong attempts to pass Lang. Now second in points Steve McElroy finished third and point leader Travis Blackwood eighth. With two races left in the 2005 season for the Bombers it is heading to a final race show-down with up to five cars involved for the championship. Next up at Evergreen Speedway during the Evergreen State Fair is the Labor Day Weekend Triple Header. The racing weekend starts on Friday September 2 with the Hertz Equipment Rental Hornets, Boat Racing, Extreme Contact Figure Eights and Stinger 8’s. Rairdon’s Dodge Chrysler Jeep of Monroe night at the races is on Saturday September 3 and the chase for the track championships continuing for the NASCAR Super Stocks, Bombers, Mini-Stocks on the 3/8-mile plus the first annual Great Northern Stinger 8 Championship and The Believers Motorcycle Stunt Team. Day three of the holiday weekend is on Sunday September 4 featuring the annual Speedway Chevrolet Giant Demolition Derby and Fireworks show. Add to the mix the Hertz Hornets, School Bus Figure Eight, Roll-Over Contest, 3-Car Trains, Bump-to-Pass and Stinger 8’s. All three days get started at 7pm with gates opening at 3:30pm. Ask for the combination ticket (fair and race) at the front gate of the fair saving money.
