STOCKTON, California -- In front of more than 3,000 fans, Stockton's Pete Anderson Jr. captured the HAVOLINE Tri-Holiday Classic 100-lap race and the prestigious HAVOLINE Tri Holiday series title.
The car was good, said Anderson Jr. from victory lane. It was the best car I ever had (this season).
Anderson Jr. started the race up front in the number 2 position and quickly took the lead, which he never relinquished.
The only place I felt safe was up front, said Anderson Jr. I didnt want to give it up for nothing.
In addition to earning the HAVOLINE Tri Holiday title, the win also strengthened his lead in the NASCAR DODGE Weekly Series HAVOLINE Western Late Model championship points race.
Although he now has a firm lead in the quest for the championship, hes not taking anything for granted.
Ill be happy when all is said and done, said Anderson Jr. in reference to the final HAVOLINE Western Late Model points event, which will consist of a double-points 100-lap main event, qualifying and dash on Saturday, Sept. 17. But I came in second last year, I feel good about it (winning the championship) right now.
Anderson Jr.s wire-to-wire win wasnt the only notable race performance. Chowchillas Eric Humphries advanced from a seventh position start, through seven-cautions and a single-red flag to take second. Mantecas Guy Guibor came from a 10th place start to take third place. San Rafaels Allison Duncan, who came into the series with the lead, finished in fourth after being sent to the back of the pack after a lap -32 collision with Stocktons Gary Shafer Jr. Stocktons Danny Contessotto earned fifth after starting in ninth.
HAVOLINE Western Late Model driver Arron Shankel finished toward the back of the pack, but he came in first in the compassion division. Following the hurricane Katrina tragedy, Shankel contacted the Red Cross and took it upon himself to collect funds during the race. A hat was passed through the stands and a good deal of cash was collected for the relief effort.
Modestos Charlie Clawson finished the CL BRYANT American Limited Stock Car race in second, but after the checkered flag waved and he passed a smoke-filled, front-straight technical inspection he leapt to the roof of his car and extended his arms into the air, waved to the crowd and celebrated his 2005 CL BRYANT ALSC championship.
I just got real lucky, said Clawson. The car ran real good and I didnt have a lot of problems.
Clawson said that he was nervous heading into the CL BRYANT ALSCs last race, because he had to finish in the top-15 to secure the championship.
An accident could have taken me out, said Clawson. There was nothing concrete (prior to the finish).
Clawson was correct, the 20-car, high-intensity 30-lap race drew three caution flags with the final one waving in lap-28, which brought on the green-white-checkered finish.
Stocktons Joe Allen started the race in the 11th position, he worked his way to the front by lap-19, then he battled with Stocktons Chad Holman in a two-lap, side-by-side dual until taking the lead, which he held to the end. The win was Allens third of the season.
Stocktons Richard Harper came in third, Holman finished fourth and Mantecas Jacob Cardoza came in fifth.
Oakdales Sheila Wall came into the season looking to capture the CL BRYANT ALSC B-main title, and she did.
Next year Ill probably come out just looking to race for fun, said Wall. I wont be focused on the points.
Pro-4 Trucks were back on the track after a few weeks off. The quick, caution-free 20-lap main event saw Mantecas Brian Hitchcock take the win, Lodis Mike Curry came in second, Lathrops Mark Henslee finished third, Oakdales Nathan McNeil came in fifth and Haywards Walt Bruegger rounded out the top five.
Tracys Mark Smith won his second career and second consecutive SRL Wildwest Shootout 100-lap race. Smith led all 100 laps, Rosevilles Eric Schmidt finished second, Napas Joey Zampa came in third, Ripons John Gaalswyk finished fourth and Modestos Steve Belletto rounded out the top five.
