STOCKTON, California -- On Sunday Sept. 11 race fans are going to witness one of the BIGGEST afternoons of open-wheel racing events ever set on pavement at historic Stockton 99 Speedway. The exciting tripleheader will feature over 200-laps of main event action!

For the second year in a row the annual Fred Gerhardt Classic will pit USAC Western Midgets drivers from as far away as Massachusetts, Washington and Indiana against each other on the super-fast, paved quarter-mile oval.

There are already more than 21 drivers pre-entered for this race, including USAC Western Midgets points leader Robby Flock of Murieta, who is the reigning division champion, 2004 USAC Western Sprints champion Tony Hunt of Lincoln, and Kevin Swindell of German Town, TN, the son of legendary World of Outlaws driver Sammy Swindell.

The Fred Gerhardt Open Wheel Classic is a fitting way to honor one of Californias legendary racing figures. Gerhardts racing accomplishments are numerous, they include a win as car owner with driver Bill Vukovich Sr. in the 1948 Turkey Night Grand Prix and a 1950 Midget title win. After mastering midgets, Gerhardt set his sights to the pinnacle of American auto racing; the Indianapolis 500. Entering cars over a span of 20 years, Gerhardt recorded a career best third place finish in 1969.

There are already more than 20 drivers entered in the fourth annual USAC Starr Sprint Classic, which is also the third and final leg of the Stockton 99 Speedway USAC Western Sprints Triple Crown race series.

Competing in this 100-lap championship race will be Donny Schatz of Fargo, ND. Open-wheel race fans know that this World of Outlaws star, who is coming fresh off of victories at Calistoga and Elma, Washington, will be giving 2004 champ Hunt and 2005 points leader Kody Swanson, of Kingsburg, a real run for their money. When these competitors 650 horse-power sprint cars hit the track, along with the cars of others who are coming from points as far away as Oregon, Indiana, Washington and Idaho, fans will have something real exciting to watch!

DuWayne Starr, for whom the Starr Classic is named after, passed away in 1999, but he left a legacy that earned him a reputation as one of Northern Californias greatest men of racing. His accomplishments as a car owner and innovator are worthy of praise. He is perhaps best known for his many race wins as owner of the famous Starr #18 Sprint Car.

Rounding out the day of racing will be dual 25-lap USAC Ford Focus Midgets races. Back on the track for the fourth time this year will be up to 15 of the super-speedy midget racers. Included in the field are 2005 main event winners Alex Harris of Simi Valley, Chase Barber of San Francisco, Benny Moon of Shingle Springs and Matt Triplett of Albuquerque, NM. Harris currently leads the division.

As part of the Sunday, Sept. 11 event, Stockton 99 Speedway will open the afternoon at 4:45 p.m. with the National Anthem and a special tribute to honor victims of the tragic events that happened on Sept. 11, 2001 in New York City and Virginia.

Pits open at 10 a.m. for haulers and registration. Practice starts at noon and grandstands open at 3 p.m. Prices are: Adults $25; Family Pack for 2 adults and up to 4 kids 12 and under $59.99; Juniors 13-17 $15; Kids 6-12 $5; Kids 5 and under free with paying adult.
