Wilton, Calif. -- The SRL Wild West Late Model Shootout’s 2005 season will come to an end Saturday night at Altamont Raceway & Arena. In the series first eleven races, four drivers have earned at least one victory. Jason Fensler leads the series with six wins, followed by Eric Schmidt with two victories, Mark Smith also has two victories, and Ken Boyd with one victory. Two of Jason Fensler’s six victories have come on Altamont Raceway & Arena’s half-mile track as Mark Smith has earned one of his two victories at Altamont. A field of over 20 SRL Late Model cars is expected as the 2005 season will come to an end after the “ACDelco/Allied Auto Stores” SRL Wild West Late Model Shootout 100.
With six victories in his inaugural SRL season Jason Fensler can taste the 2005 SRL Championship. Fensler has a 46 point lead over Mark Smith of Tracy, California. Fifty-Five points is the maximum points a driver can earn in one night of SRL racing. All Jason Fensler has to do is take the green flag and he will clinch the 2005 Championship. However, Fensler will have to fight off Mark Smith who has won two of the last three SRL races. Smith and Fensler raced hard for 27 laps at Altamont two weeks ago. As a result Smith’s car backed into the turn three wall as Fensler was put to the back of the back for spinning the race leader.
Roseville’s Eric Schmidt is third in championship standings heading into Saturday night’s feature event at Altamont. Schmidt trails Schmidt by 17 points and is coming off of a third place finish at Altamont on September 24th. Ken Boyd is fourth in the standings and 30 points behind Schmidt. Boyd won at Stockton 99 Speedway on July 2nd for R&M Racing. Jeremy Wood jumped from seventh to fifth after a second place finish at Altamont two weeks ago. The 18 year old driver is looking for his first career SRL victory. Wood has also clinched the 2005 Victory Circle Chassis and Parts Rookie of the Year away.
Joey Zampa fell one spot to sixth in point standings. Zampa trails Wood by 15 points after a 21st place finish at Altamont two weeks ago. Zampa does not have much room to breath as Troy Ermish is just ten points behind Zampa (376-366). Ermish is coming off a string of bad luck. Ermish finished 19th at Altamont two weeks ago. Roseville, California driver Harold Rieker Jr. is eight in the championship standings. Rieker Jr. also struggled at Altamont two weeks ago finishing 22nd out of 22 cars. Rieker looks to rebound and get his first SRL victory at Altamont this coming Saturday night. Aaron Days is coming off fifth place finish at Altamont two weeks ago. Days has numerous wins on Altamont’s half-mile in the late model division. Rounding out the top ten is Tracy Bolin of Valley Springs, California. Bolin finished 17th at the last outing to Altamont Raceway & Arena. Jeff Anthony and Rusty Buholz both former Altamont winners are 11th and 12th in the standings and can get into the top ten with excellent finishes Saturday night.
Jason Fensler continues to lead the Apex Financial Group Qualifying Points. Fensler set quick time on June 18th and August 20th at Altamont Raceway & Arena. Troy Ermish sits 9 points (31-22) behind Fensler heading into Saturday’s race at Altamont Raceway & Arena. Mark Smith is third in the standings with 19 points. $5,000 will be divided between the top three drivers in qualifying points at the end of the 2005 season. Apex Financial Group is based in Stockton Ca, and specializing in home loans and the refinancing of property.
Carl Peace leads the SRL Late Model Qualifying Race Points standings. Jamie Dick, Greg Potts, Wes Banks, Harry Belletto, Charles Perreira, Ray Lawson Jr., Joey Stearns, Cory Petero, Shannon Mansch, Rick Ruzbarsky, Andrew Livengood, John Ostlund, and Chad Pais have all earned Qualifying Race Points this season
