ANDERSON, California Action, drama, and one wild ride. That, in short, was the story last weekend at Shasta Raceway Park, as Cox and Cox Construction presented the season finale at the fast 3/8 mile oval at the fairgrounds in Anderson. When the dust settled on Sunday afternoon, 2005 Legend track champion Micah Parmer found himself at the top of the class again, taking home $1,500 for a victory in the West Coast Legend Classic. Jeremy Donahoo took the victory in the Bombers, winning the Lakeport/Shasta Bomber Challenge championship with a sweep, and Kevin Barba took home the win in the Mini-Stock open.
Micah Parmer, Garrett Haxby, and Randy Schaaf were consistently the fastest Legends on track all weekend long, as Haxby set fast time in qualifying, and Schaaf took a trophy dash victory. This up a showdown between the out of town gang and the local champion. There was something to be said about home track advantage. Howard Hammers took the early lead in the main event, a lead he soon gave up to the aforementioned Schaaf. Schaaf would lead until lap 37, when Parmer would take the lead and, effectively, steal the show. A few incidents did plague the A-Main event, but for the most part, mechanical gremlins caused the most problems for the Legend drivers who failed to finish. The story was different, however, on Saturday night. On the first lap of the "C" Heat race, multiple drivers tangled in turns three and four. Carson City track champion Mackena Bell, who was near the back, went high to avoid the incident, but instead, made contact with another car at a high rate of speed. The contact sent her cartwheeling along the wall, and eventually, over the wall, where she came to rest. Track safety crews responded immediately, and thankfully, Bell was okay. In fact, through hard work and a late night, her crew was able to help her get the car back out in time for Sunday’s main events. So, while Bell may have provided the highlight of the weekend, it was Parmer who took the spotlight in the end, proving that he deserved to be the champion of the Legends at Shasta Raceway Park.
The Bomber class arguably provided the best racing action of the weekend, with few cautions, many passes, and a little bumping and banging added to the mix. Jeremy Donahoo from Ukiah immediately proved that he was fast, setting fast time and a new track record for a Bomber open show. As the A-Main rolled around, local drivers David Braund and Kyle Borden proved to be strong against out of town visitors Donahoo and George Mavrakis. Mavrakis would lead the majority of the race, but behind him, positions were changing rapildy. Braund, Borden, and Donahoo were constantly swapping positions, with each turn and each lap proving vital. With just four laps to go, Donahoo took the lead for the first time all race long, and held on for the victory, taking the win by half a second over George Mavrakis, David Braund, and Kyle Borden.
After setting a new Mini-Stock track record at SRP, much was expected of Jason Shaha in the A-Main event. He lived up to that, and was pulling away from the field after taking the lead on lap ten. However, as the cliche’ goes, the race is not over until the checkered flag falls. On lap 29, Greg Sabourin spun in front of the leaders in turns three and four. Shaha went low to avoid the incident, but Sabourin slid down the track, right into Shaha’s path. Shaha's truck would sustain severe front end damage and Shaha would be done for the event. This handed the lead to Kevin Barba, who also was fast all weekend, but kept a relatively low profile. That is, until he led the remainder of the race, and took the victory.
All of us at Shasta Raceway Park would like to thank the drivers, teams, employees, and, or course, the fans that made this season possible. We wish everybody a restful off-season, and look forward to the return of racing next year!
