Sunny blue skies and 80-degree temperatures greeted 106 racecars at Wenatchee Valley Super Oval Saturday Night. The huge turnout of cars featured the Washington Midget Racing Association, the Legends and Bandeleros, The Old Time Racers Association plus two local classes the Pepsi Cola Mini Stocks and the Jerry's Auto Supply Bombers.
The Pepsi Cola Mini Stocks started the evening off. Fast time qualifier Darald Schall (Wenatchee) went 15.210 to lead the 17-car field. Three trophy dashes were won by Stacy Alseth (Arlington), Bart Davis (Ephrata) and David Postle (Everett). In the main event Postle went wire to wire for the win with Ryan Klein (East Wenatchee) and Wes Childress (Wenatchee) chasing him across the stripe.
Scott Jones of Wenatchee timed in at 15.942 to lead the 21 car Jerry's Auto Supply Bombers qualifying. Ephrata's Dallas Massey, Wenatchee's Jerry Rowe and Malaga's Shane Brim were the trophy dash winners. Jones chose to start at the back of the pack to try and win the WVSO Big Money Challenge and started off strong, picking up a few cars at a time moving his way to the front. An unusually calm and controlled Bomber main produced just two cautions in 30 laps helping eventual winner Rusty Ashbrook of East Wenatchee having to fend off the hard charging Jones who finished third.
The young drivers of the Bandeleros were led all night by 15 year old Billy Weber who fast qualified at 15.924 then won the trophy dash and 20 lap main event for a clean sweep.
The Legend cars made their first trip of 2000 to Wenatchee Valley's Super Oval bringing 26 cars with them. Overall fast time went to Chad Munsch from Bonney Lake with a 15.173 time in lap. Charlie Kuntz (Monroe) won the Semi Pro trophy dash. The Masters dash was won by Surrey, B.C.'s Dave Neveaux and winner of the Pro division trophy dash was Tacoma driver Shelby Lindsey. The Semi Pro heat race was claimed by Ferndale's Dave VanAmburg, Masters heat race winner was Neveaux and Garrett Haxby from Bainbridge Island was the Pro heat race victor. In the first main run for the Semi Pro division Kuntz led all 25 laps dogged by Dale Petry. And Dan Curtis of Lynnwood led all 25 laps of the combined Masters and Pro division main event. Rick Courtwright of Yelm won the Masters division portion of the combined main.
With racers from Idaho, Washington, Oregon and British Columbia the Old Time Racers Association brought a huge collection of classic race cars and put on an excellent race during their annual lower 48 tour. The group, which is based out of Vancouver, British Coulmbia, makes a ten day swing throughout Washington and Idaho racing at as many tracks as they can while camping out in the gorgeous Pacific Northwest. Rich Bennett of Duncan BC set a new track record of 14.928 in qualifying. Spokane's Ron Beilenberg, Roseburg, Oregon driver Ted DeRamus and Victoria BC's Dan Morneau won the trophy dashes. In the main event Bennett was the fourth and final driver to lead and held off a strong charging Spark Strong (Bonners Ferry, ID) for the win.
Rounding out the six class show was the Washington Midget Racing Association. Rick Moss (Seattle) returned to winners circle at a track where he usually owns the competition by winning the 35-lap main for his first victory since coming out of a two-year retirement. John Starks (Puyallup) the WMRA point’s leader was fast qualifier at 12.243, just a few clicks off his track record in the 12.1's. Springfield Oregon's Peter Bittrolf, DuPont's Kenny Ferris and Edmonds hot shoe Rory Price won the trophy dashes.
