LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Eighteen-year-old Spencer Clark of Las Vegas, Nev. won the Pole Award, finished fourth and battled with NASCAR Nextel Cup Series regular Ken Schrader at the United Rentals 125 NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series race at Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) Sunday for the 29th Copper World Classic.
Pilot of the No. 26 Allegiant Air-sponsored Ford, Clark powered to the front of the 38-car qualifying field posting the fastest time of 28.140 seconds at 127.932 MPH to capture the Pole Award. Starting on the pole, Clark was able to gain a lead on the 34-car field. The young driver led the majority of the race (64 laps) until lap 109 after a restart. Clark took command at the drop of the green flag for the last time. Within a few laps Clark's car started push and Schrader was able to gain the lead. Clark wheeled his Allegiant Air Ford to a fourth-place finish behind race winner Schrader, Eric Holmes and Matt Kobyluck respectively.
"I'd like to thank Ken Schrader for a great race. He is always great at Phoenix and I gained valuable knowledge & experience from competing with him," Clark said. "I enjoy racing at PIR and look forward to returning for the Busch Series race."
The next race for Spencer Clark Racing will be a return to PIR April 21 for the Bashas' Supermarkets 200 NASCAR Busch Series race.
