MONROE, Washington -- Saturday night at Evergreen Speedway the first of many races for the Speedway Chevrolet NASCAR Super Stocks went off without a hitch. The weather was the best of the year with temperatures in the 60’s warming the track and the seven racing divisions took advantage.
Winning the opening race of the revamped Super Stock Division, Rob Touche (Lake Stevens) marched to the front and was untouchable. The Les Schwab Tires NASCAR Bombers continued their season with defending division champion Travis Blackwood (Everett) on the top of the podium. NASCAR Mini-Stock driver Mark Weedin (Bothell) used the dry track to set a new track qualifying record and backed that up with a main event win. Overall winner of the Northwest Legend Series main Semi-Pro driver Nick Johnson (Bonney Lake) held off all challengers. Three Figure Eight Divisions were in action. The Super Division main was won by Greg Scott (Sedro Woolley) and Benny Raynes (Duvall) has owned the Extreme Contact Division with back to back wins in the first two races of the season. The Stinger 8 Division main was won by Craig Jantz (Snohomish).
The 50-Lap Super Stock main had fourteen cars taking the original green. As the green flag was waved to start the race there was contact and Darin Stordahl (Marysville) spun into the front stretch wall forcing a restart and ending his debut as a Super Stock driver. On the ensuing restart as the bulk of the field reached turn one there was more contact and this time John Burtsche (Bellevue) and Rob Angus (Langley, B.C.) got together ending both their nights early. On lap eight, race winner, Rob Touche took the lead from the tenth starting position. Touche was pressured for a time by Shane Harding (Langley, B.C.). Harding’s bid for the lead dissolved in the latter stages as tire wear had him falling back to a fifth place finish. Gaylon Stewart (Everett) finished second followed by Doug Davidson (Monroe).
Starting on the front row Bomber driver Travis Blackwood used that to his advantage to win the 30-lap main event. Early race leader Ryan Hansen (Lake Stevens) finished second and Russ Hales (Sammamish) finished third.
A large 16-car field started the Mini-Stock 20-lap main. Winner Mark Weedin took the lead on lap six and never looked back. Nat Barber (Sultan) may have had something for Weedin but by the time Barber was out of traffic it was too late and had to settle for second. Chad Chase (Kenmore) finished a strong third.
The Northwest Legend Series held the first of thirteen races at their home track. Twenty-one cars started the 30-lap main. Nick Johnson a Semi-Pro driver was the winner of his division and overall race winner. Rick McNeil (Burien) finished second and was the Masters Division winner. The Pro Division winner Randy Schaaf finished third.
Another full field of 14-cars took the green for the Stinger 8 main. Craig Jantz avoided traffic at the center of the figure eight to win his first of the season. Newcomer to the division Mike Middleton (Snohomish) finished second. Rod Helmuth (Everett) finished third.
Two FEAR Figure Eight Divisions continued their long seasons. The Super Division winner Greg Scott dominated the 30-lap main winning by an unprecedented ½-lap. Steve Peters (Monroe) finished the distant second ahead of Doug Delfel (Everett). The Extreme Contact Division main event winner Benny Raynes had little trouble taking the lead for second win in a row. Sean Peters (Monroe) finished second and Darrell Tiedeman (Everett) was third.
