RACING RETURNS AT SOUTH SOUND SPEEDWAYSOUTH SOUND SPEEDWAY

Brandon Riehl was the fast qualifier for the premiere of the 2006 Super Stock season. He clocked in with a 13.914 second lap, averaging 77.360 miles per hour. It was Kelly Mann won took the dash win over Tom Sweatman, Rod Schultz Jr. and Riehl. Before a lap could even be complete in the always-intense main event, there was an incident that knocked out Riehl along with Bobby Wheeler and Jim Wilcox. Rod Schultz took the early lead followed closely by Rod Schultz Jr., Tom Sweatman, Dan Rhodes and Eric Tibbitts. Tom Sweatman moved up into second on lap ten and then moved into the lead with a not so nice move on Rod Schultz Jr. Sweatman was black flagged for the incident, put one lap down and sent to the back of the pack. A caution came out on lap 20 when Rod Schultz spun in turn one. Schultz was done for the night. Rod Schultz Jr. now had the lead with Eric Tibbitts in second, Dan Rhodes in third, Bob Presley in fourth and Jeff Ford in fifth. Rhodes took over second spot on lap 37 and Kelly Mann followed him taking third. By lap 47 Tom Sweatman had moved himself behind the front two cars attempting to regain his lap. Dan Rhodes took the lead on lap 48. Lap 49 brought out another caution. Tommy Rasmussen spun and was done for the night. Chris Schlaht left during the caution, as did Rod Schultz Jr. who had a fuel leak. Neither returned to the race. Sweatman got his lap back on lap 55. Dan Rhodes still led with Kelly Mann in second, Eric Tibbitts in third, Bob Presley in fourth and Bob Coffey in fifth. By lap 75 Sweatman had worked his way into fifth position and on lap 86 he moved into second. Rhodes held him off until lap 92 when he got around him. Sweatman took the win followed by Dan Rhodes and Bob Presley. Eric Tibbitts was fourth and Bob Coffey was fifth. Finishing one lap down in sixth and seventh were Jeff Ford and Jerry Clark. Three laps down in eighth and ninth were Jim Warn and Curtis Zelmer. In tenth was Larry Gaylord, four laps down. Fast time for the Super 4’s/FSCRA was John Grosvenor with a 14.994 while Wayne Dillon won the trophy dash. Bob Quarterman won the B heat race with Kevin Koepke and Cullen Jensen in tow. Tom Pinkowsky won the A heat race followed by Matt Melby and Jerry Koepping. Dan Hale took the lead on lap one of the main event but Tom Pinkowsky took over on lap four. A caution was thrown on lap five when Jerry Koepping spun. Pinkowsky had a huge lead over the pack and ended up with the win. John Grosvenor was second, Wayne Dillon was third, Kevin Koepke was fourth and Matt Melby was fifth. Dan Hale, Jerry Koepping, Cody Stewart, Dave Powell and Bob Quarterman were the remaining top ten. Bobby Micielli clocked in fast for the Top Notch Trailers Street Stocks after replacing a transmission between qualifying and practice. Mike Saylors took the dash win over JJ Hamilton, Jay Hopkins and Micielli. Mark Boehi, in his first race back after taking two seasons off, won the B heat race followed by Charles Meadors and Sean Riley. Jay Hopkins won the A heat race with Matt Wolden in second and Hamilton in third. Charles Meadors took the lead on lap one of the main event. A caution was thrown on lap two when Tony Bartlotti spun. Matt Wolden and Bobby Micielli both left the track during the caution and lost three laps in the pits changing flat tires. Meadors led until lap six when Cody Erskine took the lead and Sean Riley moved into second. The second and final caution of the race came on lap 13 when Matt Wolden spun. Cody Erskine held on to win his first ever Street Stock main event. Sean Riley finished in second with his best ever finish. Paul Hopkins was third, Mike Saylors fourth and Jay Hopkins fifth. Beaver Campbell, Mark Boehi, Tony Bartlotti, Charles Meadors and Matt Wolden rounded out the top ten. Steve Woods pulled a hat trick in the Hinkle Homes Pure Stocks by winning the dash, heat and main event. Jared Vorse qualified fast with a 16.811. Scott Johnson won the B heat race over Brian Wilson and Tom Hecker. Steve Woods took the A heat win with Dan Walker and Steve Gerdts close behind. Brian Wilson took the early lead in the main event with Scott Johnson in second and Steve Woods in third. Wilson had stretched his lead to half a straight away by lap 12 but started leaking fluid and he left the track on lap 13 when a caution came out for Dan Walker spinning. Walker also left the track that lap. Both were unable to return. Scott Johnson held onto the lead until lap 19 when Steve Woods took over. Steve Woods took the win over Scott Johnson, Mitchell Woods, Jared Vorse and Jeff Boheler. Bryan Christoffer, Jacob Haider, Rick Casebolt, Steve Gerdts and Ian Alder were the rest of the top ten. Coming up this Saturday night, South Sound Speedway will welcome the Washington Midget Racing Association (WMRA) and the Vintage Modifieds. The Delta Camshaft Mini Stocks and Bumblebees will also be running. Qualifying will begin at 5:00 pm with racing at 6:30 pm.
