COOKSEYS TAKE HOME FIRST CAREER WSRA FEATURE WINS

Cooksey held off a late charge by Smith to take the win, followed by Bill Byington of Concord, Portera, and Hale. Cooksey held off Smith to win the heat, while Smith beat Cooksey in the dash race. �I was nervous for the first couple laps as the car was getting loose,� Cooksey said. �I�m so happy; I couldn�t have done this without my crew putting the car back together after the flip.� After 15 straight wins with nearly flawless races, 13 year-old Jacob Gomes of Manteca spun off of turn two on lap five, to surrender his winning streak in the Mini Cup feature. Gomes spun while trying to pass Robert Morgan of Rio Linda on the high-side. 16 year-old Morgan Cooksey, who finished second to Gomes in the dash race, battled hard with Rio Linda quarter-midget champion Cole Farrow through heavy traffic for the duration of the race. Coming into turn three on the final lap, Cooksey made a dramatic move to the outside and took the lead by inches at the finish. �I�m so shocked,� Cooksey said. �They came on the radio and told me it was the last lap and I had to make the move.� Cooksey�s win follows a third place finish at Stockton as the field continues to mount a heavy challenge to Gomes. �I�m really excited,� Cooksey said. �Everyone said I couldn�t drive.� �It was cool showing everyone wrong tonight.� Cooksey and Farrow were followed by Gomes, Morgan, and rookie John Bowman.
