AVANTS WINS THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN DEW CHALLENGE AT CNSCOLORADO NATIONAL SPEEDWAY

In qualifying for the RMLRA Legend Cars, Chris Eggleston of Erie in the H2O Fire Protection Ford set quick time with a 19.009 lap. Terry Plummer and Greg Yongue were second and third quick. In qualifying for the Super Modifieds, Harry Stone of Westminster in the Beacon Respiratory Chevrolet set quick time with a lap of 14.299. Second quick was Ricky Otts from Houston, TX and Rich Castor Jr was third quick. In the Snap-On Tools Pro Trucks, quick time went to the Johnson Jr Racing Engines Dodge with a lap of 16.761. Second quick was Paul Deines and Richard Burton was third quick. In qualifying for the RMMRA Midgets, Gary Taylor from Wheat Ridge set quick time with a 15.735. Keith Rauch and Russ Harper were second and third quick. The last group to come out was the Wright Group Events and Services Late Models and Chris Archer of Arvada in the Ray Farms set quick time with a 16.265 lap. Second quick was Rick Smith and third quick was Scotty Backman. John Chiesa and Scott Miller were on the front row for the Legend Car trophy dash. Kyle Clegg took the lead on lap 1 with Miller second. Yongue took over on lap 2 with Clegg still fighting on the high side. Chris Eggleston looked to the inside of Yongue on lap 4. Yongue and Clegg tangled on lap 6 for a caution, and Dennis Barkell spun to miss the spun cars. On the restart Eggleston led Terry Plummer and Miller. Plummer closed the gap on the last lap, but Eggleston held onto the win over Plummer, Miller, and a close battle between John Chiesa and Greg Yongue. In the first B Main for the RMLRA Legend Cars, Bill Yeros and Bob Peck were on the front row. Yeros led the first lap over Peck and Scott Milan. Milan took second on lap 3 from Peck and caution flew on lap 4 for Rick Rusk as he spun in turn 2. Rusk was pushed to the infield and was towed off the track. On the restart Webber moved into third and caution flew on lap 4 when Yeros spun in front of the field after contact from Milan. Yeros now led Webber and Ty Hunter. Webber took the lead on lap 6 and Jace Hansen moved into third on lap 7, knocking Hunter back to fourth. The next lap, Hansen moved into second and started chasing down Webber. Webber took the win over Hansen, Yeros, Milan, and Bob Peck. Hunter spun on the last lap and finished out of the top five. Brittney Johnson and Mike Murr were on the front row for the second B main and Murr led early with Brent Miller taking over on lap 2. Randy Milan was third on lap 4, and shot to the inside of Murr on lap 6. On lap 7, Bert Chapman spun for a caution in turn 2, under the caution Craig Coughlin was penalized two positions. On lap 7, Milan took over with Smith and Justin Davis close behind. Davis moved into second on lap 9, but wasn’t able to catch Milan. Milan took the win over Davis, Miller, Murr, and Greg O’Donnell. The B mains for the Wright Group Events and Services Late Models were next to hit the track. Darren Robertson and Steve Yackey held the front row for the first 15-lap B Main. Nick Rozack spun in turn 2 after a caution for a bad start, and a complete restart was needed. Steve Yackey led the first lap over Darren Robertson, Chris Archer, Bruce Yackey and Joe James Jr. Backman took fifth on lap 4, and on lap 5 Chris DeShon hit the wall and spun between turns 1 and 2 for a caution. On the restart, S Yackey led Archer, Robertson, B Yackey, and Backman. On the fifth lap, Archer took the lead from S Yackey and B Yackey was second on lap 6 over B Yackey, S Yackey, Backman and Robertson. S Yackey fell out of the top 5 on lap 9, and a caution flew when Darren Crocket hit the back wall and Chris Atkinson spun to miss Crocker. Archer led B Yackey, Backman, Robertson and James in the top 5. On lap 12, James moved into fourth with a pass on Robertson. Rozack spun in turn 2 on lap 12, but got going quickly. Archer took the win over a close battle between B Yackey and Backman, James and Robertson. In the second B main, Chris Eggleston and Mike Hannah led the field to the green flag. Hannah led the first lap over Eggleston, and Dan Savage. Rick Smith was into fourth and Ronnie Hults fifth by lap 5. Savage moved into second on lap 6, and then the battle for third between Eggleston and Rick Smith ended when both spun down the front-stretch on lap 8, as Ronnie Hults spun to miss the spun cars. Eggleston and Hults both got their positions back, but Smith had to go to the rear. Hannah led Savage, Eggleston, Hults, and Mike Gallegos on the restart. On lap 12, Roger Avants moved into fifth with an outside pass on Gallegos. Hannah took the win over Savage, Eggleston, Hults, and Avants. In the RMLRA Legend Cars, 28 cars started the 25-lap main event with Mike Webber and Randy Milan starting on the front row. Mike Webber led early over a pack of cars and on lap 3 caution flew when Dennis Barkell, Brent Miller, Tim Hindman, and Mike Murr tangled in turn 3. Under the caution, Kyle Clegg took his car to the pits, and would return at the rear of the field. On the restart, Webber led over Milan, Eggleston, Justin Davis, and Terry Plummer. Plummer got around Davis on lap 3. Terry Plummer and Chris Eggleston split Milan on lap 4. Plummer took the lead by lap 5 over Eggleston, Milan, Davis and Webber. Greg Yongue moved into fifth on lap 9. On lap 10, there were two tangles with John Chiesa and Darrell Stewart both tangling in turn 4, and then over by the CNS Scoreboard, Dee Duncan and Brittney Johnson tangled. On the restart, Plummer got loose and Eggleston took over the lead, and then caution flew when Mike Webber spun in turn 2, and exited the track. On the restart Eggleston led Plummer, Milan, Davis and Yongue. Yongue took over fourth on lap 13, and started chasing Milan. On lap 17, Yongue passed Milan on outside in turn 3 for third position. Duncan spun in turn 4 on lap 20 right in front of Eggleston, but got out of the way and resumed racing. Eggleston claimed his second win of the season ahead of Plummer, Yongue, Milan and Davis. In the Super Modifieds, Paco Morales and Joe Priselac had the front row for their 30-lap main event. Gary Land led the first lap over Priselac. Skip Makula pulled in the infield on lap 3 with mechanical problems. By lap 5, Ira Castor was third over Harry Stone and Ricky Otts. Joe Priselac and Paco Morales tangled in turn 1 on lap 9 with both cars making hard contact. Land now led I Castor, Stone, Otts, and Rich Castor Jr. Stone moved into second on lap 10 putting I Stone back to third. Otts moved into third on lap 13, and Stone took the lead. On lap 14, Otts took second from Land and started chasing Stone. R Castor moved into third by lap 20 with Land fourth and H.J. Evans moving into fifth. By lap 25, Evans moved around Land and on lap 26, Otts took the lead from Stone and took off. I Castor got around Land on lap 29, but it was all Otts. Otts took the win with Stone, R Castor, Evans, and I Castor following. Billy Harkins and Mike Bowen were on the front row for the 30-lap Snap-On Tools Pro Truck main event. Bowen took the lead early over Beau Kellogg, Chris Leaf, Paul Deines and Harkins. Adam Deines took over fifth on lap 5. The Kellogg, Leaf P Deines, and A Deines train got together with Jim Carter in turn 2 on lap 15 and Leaf did a super job of saving his truck from spinning out. Carter spun for the caution and was towed off. On lap 15, Richard Burton moved into fifth, as A Deines fell back. A Deines moved back into fifth on lap 20. P Deines took third from Leaf on lap 22 and set his sights on Kellogg. P Deines took over second on lap 23, with Leaf and P Deines also getting around Kellogg. On lap 28, Burton got by Kellogg for fifth, and Harkins slapped the wall and smoked the last lap around to finish the race. Bowen in the United Power Chevrolet won over P Deines, Leaf, A Deines, and Burton. Kyle Rayburn and Darren Crocker were on the front row for the 25-lap RMMRA Midget main. Rayburn took off in the lead and he broke in turn 4 on lap 3. Butch Middleton now led on the restart over Crocker, Robert Hanley, Russ Harper and Gary Taylor. On lap 4, Taylor got around Harper for fourth. By lap 10, Taylor led, over Middleton, Harper, Hanley, and Crocker. Hanley slammed into the turn 3 wall after trying to get around Harper for third. Harper and Hanley both went into the pits. Taylor now led Rauch, Middleton, Crocker, and Bobby Harr by lap 20. Taylor in the Harry and Louise Conklin owned Midget held on for the win over Rauch, Middleton, Crocker and Harr. The Wright Group Events and Services Late Models started their 40-lap main event with 30 cars. Darren Robertson and Mike Hannah lined up on the front row. Rick Smith was pushed off the track before the green flag, and came back after the green-yellow warm up laps. Barney Visser, Nathan Owen and Mark Dixon all spun as they got the green flag, for a caution. On the restart, Owen and David Johnson tangled as they got the green flag. Johnson slammed into the front wall and Owen spun. Owen pitted and Johnson’s Brothers BBQ ride was towed off. On the third try to get the race started, Chris Archer got loose in turn 3 and clipped Ronnie Hults. Hults spun and Kyle Yattaw spun to miss the action. Amazingly, Hults was missed by the entire field. On the fourth try to get the race started, Robertson led Hannah and Chris Eggleston as one lap got completed. Roger Avants and Dan Savage rounded out the top 5 by lap 3. On lap 6, Yattaw spun in turn 4 to bring out the caution. Hannah pulled into the infield on the restart and rejoined at the rear of the field. Robertson now led Avants, Eggleston, Savage and Hults. Mark Dixon pitted on lap 10 and Hannah pitted on lap 13 after several trips into the infield. By lap 17, Avants started closing the gap between himself and Robertson. Eggleston, Hults and Chris Archer rounded out the top 5. On lap 19, Avants went to the outside and got around Robertson for the lead. Robertson kept within striking distance of Avants, and caution flew on lap 24 for spins in turn 4. Archer got around Hults or fifth on lap 25 for third, and Robertson started looking to the inside of Avants. By lap 30, Backman got by Hults to move into the top 5. On lap 30, Dan Alamaa spun in turn 4 for a caution. On the restart, Archer shot to the inside of Eggleston, and then got by Robertson on lap 31. The top 5 was now Avants, Archer, Robertson, Backman, and Eggleston. On lap 38, Backman got by Robertson for third. On lap 39, Barney Visser, Chris DeShon, and Brian Pacheco tangled in turn 2. This would force a green-white-checkered finish. When the cars re-fired, Robertson and Mike Gallegos both needed a push, and went to the rear of the field. Avants now led Archer, Backman, Eggleston and PJ Mattorano. Nick Rozack pulled off on the restart, and Avants jumped the restart for another try at the finish. For the second race in a row, Avants took the win with Archer in tow. Backman was third ahead of Eggleston and Mattorano.
