ANTIOCH, CA… JULY 15...Back behind the wheel of the familiar Golden Bear Alarm Service Harris Modified, veteran Randy McDaniel won a thrilling battle with title contender J.D. Willis in the 25 lap All Pro Series Dirt Modified feature Saturday night at Antioch Speedway. The win paid many time Northern California Modified champion McDaniel $600 as Willis settled for a $300 second in the Bill Bowers owned Coelho Modified with point leader Don Shelton a $200 third. Daniel Hodges became the sixth different Super Stock main event winner with his 15-lap victory ahead of Brandi Ford. After apparent winner Tim Ackerman was disqualified in tech, Paul Landers was awarded the victory in the 20-lap Pure Stock main event ahead of Trevor Clymens and point leader Jeremy Prince.
McDaniel drew the front row of the 19-car Dirt Modified main event with Willis starting tenth as the previous winner. McDaniel set the early pace ahead of rookie Matt Perry and Michael Paul. Perry and Paul crashed in Turn 2 with McDaniel leading ninth starter Shelton and Rob Waldrop back to the lap four-caution flag. The brutal race saw four caution flags in the next six laps, including a Turn 2 crash that eliminated Brian Curran, newcomer Todd Clymens and Paul. McDaniel led Waldrop and Shelton on all four restarts, and a low pass in Turn 3 of the 11th lap gained Shelton second. Dennis Furia Sr. took third from Waldrop on lap 12, but he surrendered the position to Willis a lap later. Willis took second from Shelton on a lap 14 restart and immediately began to pressure McDaniel for the lead. Throughout the final ten circuits, Willis pulled even with McDaniel on several occasions, but McDaniel managed to stay just in front of him on the outside groove. McDaniel beat Willis by half a car in a crowd-pleasing race. Shelton settled for third ahead of Brad Coelho and Kent Bickford.
Unaware that this was not a Modified Street Stock event, Petaluma visitor Shawn McCoy and John Asher were allowed to tag the rear of the Super Stock main event. David Rosa and Hodges shared the front row of the main event, but Rosa spun in Turn 2 on the opening lap, collecting Ron Brown and Lori Brown. Leader Dusty Green spun in Turn 4 as Hodges led Brandi Ford and Chester Kniss back to the line. Hodges pitted during the caution period. Ford led Kniss and Green on the restart. Hodges was fourth on lap four and used a front stretch pass a lap later to take third from Green. Green spun in Turn 4 for a lap six caution flag. Ford chose the outside on the restart, but Kniss beat her into Turn 1 as Rosa settled into third. Rosa and Hodges were second and third on lap eight when Ford spun in Turn 1. Kniss chose the outside on the restart and led Hodges and L. Brown as Rosa spun for a yellow flag. Rosa was black flagged for causing two yellow flags. Kniss led Hodges and L. Brown on the restart and R. Brown crashed for a lap 13 caution flag. Kniss suffered an electrical problem just before the restart and pitted. Hodges led the rest of the way to win ahead of Ford, Asher, McCoy and Green.
Landers drew the pole for the 18 car Pure Stock main event with Ackerman starting seventh. Landers set the early pace ahead of Sue Curl. Ackerman gained third on lap two, but previous winner Ty Duggins made a high pass in Turn 3 of the seventh lap for third. An outside move on the front stretch in traffic gained Curl the lead from Landers on lap 12 before Robert Coe spun in Turn 1 for a caution flag. Curl led Landers and Duggins on the restart, but she lost a tire in Turn 2 of the 14th lap, causing a pileup that collected Duggins. Landers led Ackerman and Prince back to the flag. Landers chose the inside and continued to lead Ackerman and Prince on the restart. A high pass in Turn 2 of the 17th lap gained Ackerman the lead. Landers briefly reclaimed the lead on a lap 18 restart, but Ackerman re-passed him in Turn 4 a lap later. Ackerman crossed the line first, but he was later disqualified in post race tech for running an aftermarket axle. Landers was awarded the win ahead of Trevor Clymens, Prince, Coe and Duggins.
The 22 Dirt Modifieds on hand ran three qualifying heat races with Willis, Curran and Bob Newberry winning the eight lap races. Willis also claimed six lap trophy dash honors. R. Brown won the eight lap Super Stock heat race. In the eighth lap Pure Stock qualifying heats Curl and Clymens scored wins. Duggins won his heat after the Ackerman disqualification, and a rough driving call on Landers gave that heat win to Cody Frades. Paul Salaiz was awarded the ten lap C Main win after a contact pass in the final lap saw Jason Ryan dropped back to second ahead of Fred Baker. Prince was awarded the 15 lap B Main win ahead of Mike Meazell and Robert Burns after Steve Bisordi Sr. was disqualified for running an aftermarket axle.
