YAKIMA, Washington -- Yakima’s own Erick Hargraves took the lead from Ron Bemis on lap 8 and never looked back as he won the action packed 40 lap main event. Ashley Beaman came to the track late to start at the back of the pack and passed several cars on the first lap. By lap 7 she went into turn one a little deep and the car got loose. She tried to correct it only to slide off the track while collecting B.J. Tidrick with her into the rocks. Both cars went down a lap. The rest of the race had Jack Mondor III working his way up to challenge Hargraves only to be denied a chance at the lead. Fast qualifier Christopher Kalsch was also a serious challenger until lap 35 when he took turn three too hard and spun off the track. J.C. Wofford also came to the track late and couldn’t time in. He too started at the back of the pack. Wofford worked his way up to the front to win the race. But this race also saw its share of mayhem as Andy Beaman took the lead on lap four only to have Wofford knocking on his bumper. Beaman stayed in his groove only to have Wofford work his way around Beaman by passing him on the inside. Beaman began his quest to get the lead back only to loose an engine on the back straight and dumping oil through turns three and four. Rick Christopherson had a horrible night as he went little high in turn one and ended up in the wall of tires on the back straight. His car didn’t run as strong for the rest of the night. The H and H Furniture Hobby stocks saw another commanding performance from Dusty John. John, 2005 Rookie of the Year, from Moxee, Washington, won his fourth main event. For the first time in the 41 years of Yakima Speedway the Hobby field was so big that a B-Main was necessary to run. The top 16 all timed in within five tenths of a second from each other in this breakout class. The B-Main had 10 cars fighting for the top four transfer positions. Jamison Armstrong, borrowing the car of Darrell Wynn, took the lead and was never challenged throughout the 15-lap race. Don Klang and Billy Benge all raced a good clean race and stayed in position. The fourth place battle came down, as Jamie Benge, Chris Richter Jr. and Ben St. Mary were all battling for position and they all ended up spinning in between turns three and four. This allowed the transfer spot to be taken by Don Sowder. The main event proved to be an exciting race as A.J. Rose took the lead from the poll as Brandon Hailey, Jeff Stinson, and Jessie Vincent all tangled going into turn three. A few laps later had Ken Mullins and Billy Benge flying off of turn two only to have Benge landing on top of the wall in the back straight. Benge backed his car off and continued with the race. Mullins and Jeff Stinson also tangled on the backstretch on lap 24 as John took the lead with Marcus Maggard and Brian Pepper following close behind to put Rose down to fourth place. The crowd pleasing Hornets and Bump to Pass cars rounded out the evening racing with Kyle Wade and Robert Albert taking home the honors on the little 1/5th mile track The next race will be June 10th and Yakima Speedway will celebrate the 2nd Annual Schools Out Night at the Races with all five classes taking the track. Any student 17 and under with their school’s ID badge can get in for free. On June 17th the postponed race of the NASCAR Northwest AutoZone Tour will be back in town along with the Washington Midget Racing Association. An exciting schedule is being developed for the month of June and July. So watch the website and paper for changes. Late Models
